"If your father says anything harsh, please don't take it to heart, okay? He's just been stuck in his own head. He doesn't mean any harm," Madonna said cautiously.
"I don't care," Lance replied coolly.
"Lance..." Madonna's heart ached at his indifference. How could he not care? Being treated so terribly by his own father must have left some resentment. Lance's calm facade was only because he and Jackson had been so close growing up.
"Also, I'd like to bring your grandmother back to stay for a few days..." Madonna ventured.
"Absolutely not." Lance's tone hardened. "Mom, what Grandma did was unforgivable. I can't forgive her. She's perfectly fine living abroad. If you want a family reunion, go visit her there."
Madonna fell silent.
"Is there anything else? If not, I'm hanging up," Lance said coldly.
Madonna quickly recovered. "I just wanted to chat a bit more. But if you're busy, we can talk when I get back for the holidays."
"Yeah." Lance hung up shortly after.
"Nathalie?" he called out immediately.
Aaron chimed in, "Boss and Mrs. Adams will definitely make a full recovery soon."
Nicol cracked open a beer. "What's with the soda? Are you a kid? Come on, let's drink. Beer has more of a kick to it."
Bagot, easily provoked, swapped his soda for a beer and clinked cans with Nicol. "We're relying on you to protect us from now on. Especially Nathalie. She's the apple of Lance's eye. Nothing can happen to her."
Nicol thumped his chest. "I swear on my life, I'll protect our Nat!"
Bagot twitched. "When did you change how you address her? Does Lance know about this?"
