Chapter 681
Her great-grandmother would find out eventually.
She didn’t even want to imagine how heartbroken the old woman would be when she learned the truth.
Closing her eyes, she lay back down.
Hearing her movements, Lance turned toward her and said in a low voi “Let’s handle this after we get back. Just rest for now, okay?”
“Mhm.”
Nathalie murmured softly.
She turned on her side, her back to him, but she couldn’t calm her racing thoughts.
Just then, she heard the rustling of fabric behind her. A second later, his broad, warm palm settled on her shoulder, patting her gently.
“I’ll help you sleep.”
Her thick lashes fluttered.
He continued, “In the past, I used to hoid you and tell you stories until you drifted off. Do you still want to hear a story, Nat?”
She kept her eyes closed, offering no response.
Lance simply kept patting her shoulder, coaxing her to sleep.
Perhaps his soothing motions actually worked, because she soon calmed down and drifted into a deep slumber.
Lance didn’t stop, though. He inched closer and closer until his chest was flush against her back. Only then did he finally settle.
It was a good night’s sleep.
The next morning, as Elara checked Nathalie’s pulse, her brows sudder furrowed. She stroked her chin.
“Tsk…”
“What’s wrong?” Lance asked immediately, his voice laced with tension
After checking both wrists, Elara finally looked at Nathalie and asked, “Nat, did you take some kind of miracle cure last night? Why does it fee like the erratic energy in your body has smoothed out so much?”
Nathalie blinked in confusion.
She hadn’t done anything of the sort.
Elara looked at her skeptically. “Are you sure?”
Nathalie shook her head.
Right then, Lance casually chimed in, “Can a healthy amount of intimacy regulate one’s physical condition?”
Elara’s eyes widened in shock. “Ah! I knew it. You two snuck around and did the deed.”
Lance replied with utmost seriousness, “First of all, we didn’t sneak around. We’re married; it’s legally protected. Second, it’s not a bad deed. It’s beneficial for one’s physical and mental health.”
C
“Hmph!” Elara scoffed. “You’re a man who’s about to get dumped by Nat, yet you’re still clinging to her. If that’s not bad, what is?”
Lance’s expression darkened.
“But,” Elara pivoted smoothly, “a moderate amount of intense physical activity can indeed balance hormones. I have no objections to that.
His grim expression softened a fraction. “Examine me, too,” he demanded.
Elara finished her check-ups on both of them, administered their acupuncture sessions, and then left to see if the medicinal tonic was ready.
Only the two of them remained in the hospital room.
Lance broke the silence. “Nat, did you hear that?”
Nathalie blinked, bewildered, and typed on her phone: [Hear what?]
“A healthy amount of intimacy can regulate the body. Should we continue tonight?” he suggested smoothly.
Nathalie was speechless.
“Nat?”
When she didn’t respond, he started calling her name, acting as if he’d just keep chanting it until she answered.
She simply closed her eyes, fully embracing her temporary muteness.
After a few seconds of silence, Lance suddenly said in a low, teasing voice, “If Great-Grandma calls you again…”
The cold, automated female voice of her text-to-speech app rang out: [Keep dreaming.]
Lance’s lips curved upward into a deep, rumbling chuckle.
Nathalie’s eyes lit up. That meant she would be able to speak soon!
But what about Lance?
Did that mean he would regain his sight soon too?
As if reading her thoughts, Elara hesitated before saying, “His condition is very tricky. The eyes are incredibly fragile. I can only say I’m doing my best. I can’t guarantee a full recovery.”
She lowered her head slightly, looking overwhelmed with guilt.
Nathalie’s breath caught. She quickly grabbed her phone and typed, [You’re already amazing. Because of you, we have a sliver of hope. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Just doing your best is enough.]
“Yeah!”
Elara nodded. She really liked being around Nathalie; it felt as though a gentle, comforting force always surrounded her, putting her at ease without her even realizing it.
At the same time, it deepened her hatred for the people who had tried to
hurt them.
Those monsters were the ones who deserved to suffer these torments. They deserved to die!
