Chapter 721
His breath tangled with hers, like an airtight wall, making it hard for her to breathe. Her own breathing grew erratic.
She gripped her phone, closing her eyes for a moment against the soft pressure of his lips on the corner of hers. Opening them again, she began to type.
Her phone wasn’t on silent. The staccato clicks of the keyboard echoed sharply in the quiet room. The man pressing tender kisses to her skin paused, his warm breath fanning across her cheek.
A moment later, the cold, robotic text-to-speech voice chimed, “I’m tired. I
want to sleep.”
The rejection was crystal clear.
Lance’s breathing grew heavier. He reached out, wanting to take the phone away to stop her from typing, but he knew the consequences of pushing her would be disastrous.
Burying his face against her neck, his voice came out muffled and tight. “I just wanted to taste the lychee candy.”
She didn’t type another word, but her silence was a rejection in itself.
Lance pulled back, shifting his weight off her. He lay down beside her, his arm still wrapped securely around her waist. “Can we just sleep like this? I promise I won’t try anything.”
Nathalie ignored him. Pulling the covers up, she let her breathing even
out.
In the darkness, his breaths remained ragged and hot, the tension in his body painfully coiled.
After a long, excruciating battle with his own restraint, he pressed a hard, desperate kiss to her temple before sliding out of bed and blindly
navigating his way to the bathroom.
When Nathalie was hovering on the edge of sleep, the mattress dipped. The man settled back in beside her, carrying a chill that seeped into her
skin.
She stirred, her brows furrowing as she opened her eyes to look at him.
“Did I wake you?”
Catching the slight shift in her breathing, Lance turned his face toward her. “I couldn’t sleep,” he murmured apologetically. “Sorry.”
Nathalie reached for her phone.
He caught her hand gently. “I swear I won’t wake you again. Go back to sleep.”
He already knew what she was about to type-she wanted to leave the
room.
He couldn’t let that happen. She had to stay with him.
Nathalie pulled her hand free, rolling over and turning her back to him.
This time, Lance kept his distance, terrified that his overwhelming need would ruin whatever fragile peace they had.
The next morning.
Nathalie coughed up a mouthful of dark, clotted blood. Panicking, she. hurried to get Elara Lane.
Elara, who had just finished washing up, inspected it carefully. She turned to Nathalie. “Try speaking. See if you can make a sound.”
