The Unwavering Heart That Broke novel Chapter 92

Nathalie’s fingers curled tight, her emotions running wild. She got up suddenly and headed for the door.

“Stop right there.”

Lance’s voice was gentle, but it stopped her.

She turned, her words sharp. “Did you bring me here just to torture me? To make me watch you spoil another woman’s kid? You even got a vasectomy for him.”

Her breath came in short stabs, each inhale hurting like needles in her chest.

“How can you be such a jerk?”

Lance frowned and said, “I wanted you and Jasper to get closer.”

“That’s never going to happen.”

Nathalie looked him straight in the eye, her voice icy. “First, you ignored me because of him, lied to me over and over. I can’t forgive that. Second, he’s Felice’s son. I hate Felice. There’s no way I’ll ever play nice with her kid. So just stop trying.”

She was so serious, her eyes cold and shining with something broken. Lance’s frown just deepened.

A little whimper broke the tension. Jasper had started to cry, scared by all the grown-up anger.

Lance scooped him up and spoke quietly. “Don’t cry. Nathalie and I aren’t fighting, okay?”

Jasper sniffled, his lashes wet with tears.

Nathalie let out a hard, bitter laugh. “Mother and son really are alike. You both know exactly how to turn on the waterworks. Nobody else could pull off a trick like that.”

“Don’t be mean,” Lance said, looking frustrated. “He’s just a kid.”

She shot him a look, sounding almost tired. “You’re the one who brought me here. Now you ask for the truth and can’t handle it.”

Lance felt beaten down and annoyed, but with Jasper in his arms, he held himself back.

“Let go,” Nathalie snapped, yanking her hand free.

Felice stumbled and fell to the floor, crying out in pain.

The nanny rushed to help her up. “Felice, are you alright?”

Lance arrived at that moment, taking in the scene, his face darkening. “What just happened?”

Felice brushed him off, trying to smile. “It’s fine, Lance. Don’t blame Nathalie. Did you two get into a fight? Was it another misunderstanding about me? I’m really okay.”

Lance looked into the elevator at Nathalie, his voice strained. “Did you hit her?”

Nathalie’s hands were balled up, her eyes sharp and cold as she stared at the scene, one she’d seen too many times before.

Suddenly, she stepped out of the elevator and slapped Felice straight across the face.
