The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 101

"Chloe, he would never marry a woman he didn't love!" Eleonora Hayes said, heartbroken. "Is there a misunderstanding between you two? Is it because of Jenna Cameron?"

Preston and Jenna's relationship was obvious to anyone with eyes.

Yet he alone could self-righteously claim they were just friends.

"Grandma, Preston and I..."

As Chloe opened her mouth, the heart monitor beside the bed suddenly emitted a sharp alarm. Eleonora's emotions flared instantly.

Seeing the older woman's reddened eyes, Chloe swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue. Her fingers curled inward as she gently soothed her.

"Grandma, that letter was a fake. It was probably someone's sick prank."

"Preston and I did have a fight, but what couple doesn't argue? We wouldn't just get divorced over nothing."

Hearing this, Eleonora finally relaxed.

Right then, the doctor arrived and told Chloe, "The patient needs to rest. Please wait outside."

Chloe looked at the hospital bed and murmured, "Grandma, get some good rest. I'll come see you tomorrow."

"Okay, Chloe. If Preston makes you mad, you must tell me!"

Chloe agreed, turned around, and quietly slipped out of the room.

As soon as she was outside, Eleonora's personal maid hurried over, hesitating before speaking. "Mrs. Hayes, I actually know you didn't leave that letter. Mr. Hayes was just anxious, so please don't take it to heart."

Chloe looked at her.

"This afternoon, I vaguely saw a figure..." She paused. "But the hallway security cameras coincidentally broke down, so there's no proof."

Chloe nodded slightly. "Yeah, thank you."

The maid anxiously added, "Mrs. Hayes, are you... are you really going to divorce Mr. Preston? Please reconsider!"

"Ever since that misunderstanding about your pregnancy last time, Mrs. Hayes has been depressed and distracted. She fell ill the very next day. She wouldn't let us tell you. At her age, she's been longing for a great-grandchild but was afraid of pressuring you both, so she kept it all bottled up."

"Chloe, how exactly have I wronged you?"

"When it comes down to it, you just can't tolerate Jenna. But I've already made it crystal clear. She and I are just normal friends. We are now, and we always will be!"

He tried desperately to explain. "Jenna was kidnapped abroad. You can't even begin to imagine the suffering she's endured all these years. Her psychological trauma is severe, and she can't hold on without someone to help her. Furthermore, she saved my life back then. Isn't it only right that I help her now?"

"Yeah."

Chloe's eyes were indifferent and cold. "You're absolutely right. After all, you even used our marriage to repay a debt of gratitude. Returning a favor to her now is perfectly normal for you."

"Chloe!"

Preston hadn't expected his earnest explanation to be met with her sarcastic mockery.

"Do you even have a heart? Even if you dislike Jenna, shouldn't you have some basic human empathy?"

Chloe suddenly laughed. "Are you asking me to sympathize with someone who almost got me killed, who repeatedly insulted and framed me?"
