Jenna Cameron looked pale and frail, resting her head gently against Preston's chest.

Preston stiffened. His first instinct was to push her away, but as his gaze fell on her bloodless face, he froze, his arms remaining at his sides.

Jenna's voice trembled with a tearful, reedy edge. "My head hurts so much... Am I going to die?"

"You're overthinking it." Preston suddenly stood up, smoothly pulling away from her grasp. "Chloe isn't that kind of person."

"You trust her that much?" Jenna couldn't hold back anymore. Her voice pitched higher, her eyes flashing with indignant reluctance.

Preston's dark eyes were unreadable. "Rest easy. I won't let anything happen to you."

His reaction was entirely outside the realm of Jenna's expectations.
