Yet, Jenna remained curled up on the bed, groaning in pain. Her voice was weak and pitiful.
"I feel awful... My head hurts so much..."
"Am I going to die..."
"Preston... It hurts so much... Don't leave me. Please stay with me..."
Preston looked at the doctor, his expression darkening. "What is going on with her?"
The doctor wiped a nervous bead of sweat from his brow. "Mr. Hayes, theoretically, this shouldn't be happening... Perhaps there's an underlying neurological issue we haven't detected yet."
"Then keep running tests," Preston ordered.
He stayed by her bedside late into the night. It wasn't until Jenna's breathing evened out into a deep, steady slumber that he quietly stood up and slipped out of the room.
Ken was waiting in the corridor. Seeing Preston emerge, he immediately stepped forward and gave a low-voiced report about Gus Gordon causing a scene at a restaurant earlier that evening.
Preston's expression shifted. He was about to speak, but as his peripheral vision caught the door to the ward, he suppressed the irritation flaring in his eyes.
"I'm aware."
He paused for a moment before issuing a new order. "Submit a visitation request for the prison on my behalf. Go see Jeremiah Gordon and find out exactly what he wants to tell me."
"Right away, Boss."
Recalling the events of the day, Ken hesitated for a second before he couldn't stop himself from asking, "Mr. Hayes, are you... really going to divorce your wife?"
Ken remembered talking with Chloe in the past. Despite her hearing impairment, her eloquence and insight were incredibly refreshing, leaving him feeling out of his depth.
Truthfully, Jenna wasn't even on the same level as Chloe.
Seeing Preston remain silent, Ken realized he had overstepped and immediately lowered his head. "I apologize, Mr. Hayes. I shouldn't have asked..."
But Preston suddenly spoke, his tone casual yet laced with a stubborn, borderline obsessive certainty.
"She won't divorce me."
"She's been dealt a bad hand lately. Everyone has a breaking point, and I understand that."
"It's perfectly normal for her to throw a tantrum. If she needs a way out to save face, I'll give it to her."
He seemed to be explaining it to Ken, but it sounded more like he was trying to convince himself.
