"Where did you hear he was in the country?"
Preston looked surprised but quickly dismissed it. "Honestly, his medical skills aren't as miraculous as the rumors say. It's mostly just hype."
Chloe's fingers curled into tight fists.
Preston looked at her, his eyes darkening as his voice softened.
"Chloe, I haven't given up on fixing your ears either. Don't worry, medical technology is advancing every day. There might be a massive breakthrough tomorrow. I promise I'll find someone who can cure you."
A wave of guilt and pity washed over him, and he reached out to pull her close.
"Have your ears been bothering you again these past few days?"
Chloe jerked back to avoid his touch. "Just get to the hot springs so we can take the photos. I have things to do."
She turned her head away, refusing to look at his hypocritical face.
Preston froze.
Was she genuinely angry about Dr. Macleod?
Staring at her icy profile, an absurd thought flickered through his mind, but he instantly crushed it.
Chloe must have just heard the news from somewhere. There was no way she could have been the one to bring Dr. Macleod to the country.
Preston softened his tone, trying to explain.
"Chloe, the reason I had Dr. Macleod examine Jenna yesterday was because her injuries were incredibly severe. The doctors warned that if they didn't map out the brain trauma, she could suffer permanent side effects."
"If you want him to examine you too, I'll call him right now."
True to his word, Preston made the call on the spot.
But on the other end, Ken's voice came through, thick with hesitation.
"Mr. Hayes, Dr. Macleod's assistant just informed me... The doctor is furious. He said you wasted his time with a patient faking her symptoms. We can't reach him at all right now..."
Preston frowned. "Keep trying."
Then he remembered something else. "By the way, did you go to the prison?"
"Boss, the visitation is scheduled for today. I'll notify you the second I have an update."
"Understood."
