"Achoo—"
The next morning, Chloe sneezed the moment her eyes opened.
A cold front must have moved in; the night had felt exceptionally freezing.
Thankfully, she had dreamed of a massive space heater that had warmed her right up, allowing her to sleep incredibly soundly.
She sat up and realized Preston was already gone.
As soon as she walked out of the room, she saw him coming through the front door, walking Yuri on a leash.
Chloe immediately rushed over and scooped the puppy into her arms.
"You are not allowed to touch him ever again, let alone take him outside!"
Preston watched her bristle like an angry cat and let out a cold chuckle.
But he was in a good mood and didn't feel like arguing, so he replied smoothly.
"I wasn't touching him. He wanted to touch me. What am I supposed to do?"
He reached into his pocket and magically produced a piece of jerky.
Instantly, Yuri wriggled out of Chloe's arms, practically sprinting over to wag his tail at Preston's feet.
Preston smiled, gently patting the pup's head as he looked up at Chloe.
"What about this situation? You can't falsely accuse me now, can you?"
"...Yuri, get over here!" Chloe was exasperated.
"Yuri, come here, have some jerky," Preston coaxed in a soft, gentle voice.
Yuri wanted to run back to Chloe, but the allure of the treat was too much to resist, leaving the poor puppy incredibly conflicted.
Preston slowly held the jerky out to the dog. "Chloe, isn't it a bit cruel to keep a puppy away from someone he obviously likes?"
"Don't you hate dogs? What game are you playing now?"
Hate them?
Preston raised an eyebrow slightly.
He certainly hated dogs. Especially a dog that belonged to Quentin.
But since Chloe was now the dog's mother, he had no choice but to be its father.
Right then, Eleonora came down the stairs.
Her voice dropped, becoming deadly serious. "If you see any of those people, pretend they don't exist. Do not engage them, and under no circumstances do anything impulsive."
Preston knew exactly who she was talking about. He nodded easily.
"Yeah, I know."
He ignored Chloe's piercing glare. "Chloe, remember to leave next week open. I won a jewelry set at auction the other day. It'll look perfect on you."
"..."
Chloe spoke up abruptly. "Grandma, I'm sorry, I have plans next week."
Preston's eyes immediately snapped to her.
His tone turned icy, cutting off Eleonora before she could speak.
"Chloe, do you have plans, or do you just not want to go?"
Eleonora hurried to smooth things over. "It's fine, Chloe. Focus on your own schedule first."
She leveled a glare at Preston. "Watch your tone! If Chloe says she's busy, then she obviously has things to do!"
Preston opened his mouth to argue, but Chloe was already on her feet, gently scooping up Yuri.
