A thick layer of impenetrable frost and heavy gloom clung to his sharp features.
"Why are you still here?" Chloe frowned immediately.
Preston stood rooted to the spot. "Waiting to take you home."
Chloe looked away, refusing to meet his eyes. "You need to leave."
Just then, Dr. Sharpe stepped to the door of the RV, her gaze sweeping over them.
"Is there a problem?"
Preston took a step forward, as if staking his claim. "Dr. Sharpe, it is an honor. I am Chloe's husband."
Dr. Sharpe gave a slow, measured nod. "Mr. Hayes. You were quite invested in my assistant position recently. I assume you were fighting for it on your wife's behalf?"
Hearing this, Chloe froze.
But almost immediately, self-deprecation crushed that pathetic, fleeting spark of hope.
Impossible. Don't be ridiculous.
The only person Preston would ever fight that hard for was Jenna.
Right on cue, Preston spoke.
"How could I ever bear to let my wife go out and suffer? All she needs is to live a peaceful, happy life. Whatever she desires, I can give it to her."
Dr. Sharpe offered a faint, unreadable smile.
Listening to him, Chloe felt utterly nauseated.
"Dr. Sharpe, I apologize for disturbing you so late. Please get some rest. I'll be going now."
Forcing down the disgust churning in her chest, she turned, gave a respectful bow to Dr. Sharpe, and briskly walked away, refusing to spare Preston another glance.
She hadn't made it far when she suddenly stopped and glared at the man trailing relentlessly behind her.
"Preston, what exactly do you want?"
Preston stared back. "Chloe, Yuri is still at home. Are you absolutely sure you're not going back?"
"I'll have someone pick him up later," she said coldly.
Preston's voice dropped to a menacing pitch. "You trust someone else to get him? You're not worried they'll sell him? Chloe, since you decided to keep him, shouldn't you take some responsibility?"
"Besides, Grandma is waiting for you at home."
Chloe fired back, "Grandma already texted me; she went back to the estate. Preston, can you stop making up these pathetic excuses? What do you want?"
