Chloe felt a wave of suffocating helplessness.
In the confined space, Preston's scent was overpowering. That crisp fragrance she once adored now only fueled her anger, frustration, and suffocating tension.
Her chest heaved as she fought to keep her impulses in check.
Then, her phone rang. It was Dr. Sharpe, likely calling to ask why she hadn't arrived yet.
Just as Chloe hung up, a low voice spoke beside her.
"Who was that?" Preston asked, a faint smile playing on his lips. "Why didn't you answer? Is it because I'm here?"
Hearing his probing tone, Chloe snapped.
She hurled her phone against the dashboard.
"Yes! Because I'm a terrible person! I betrayed you! I cheated! It's all my fault! Are you happy now?!"
After the loud crash, a long silence filled the car.
Eventually, Preston reached out and picked up the phone. Before handing it back to her, he discreetly checked the call log.
"I didn't mean anything by it," he said.
Chloe felt like a ticking time bomb, her emotions wildly unstable.
In the driver's seat, Ken, who had always known Chloe to be gentle and composed, was so startled he kept stealing glances at her through the rearview mirror.
Chloe turned her face away, her hands clenched into tight fists, knuckles turning white.
This loss of control felt completely alien to her. She felt disgusted and terrified by her own reaction. She hated acting like this.
A dead silence fell over the car.
Soon, they arrived at The Crestwood Estates.
As soon as the car stopped, Chloe threw her door open and walked away without looking back.
His face dark, Preston caught up in a few strides and grabbed her wrist.
"Chloe!"
Suppressing his anger, he apologized. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I didn't realize you'd get so mad."
The sudden question made Chloe freeze in her tracks.
"Wendy told me about that phone call we got at the house the other day," Preston continued.
The more he thought about it, the stranger it seemed, so he had dialed the number back. Unfortunately, no one picked up after several tries, and he eventually forgot about it when work piled up.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" he asked. "If you don't tell me, I guess I'll have to find out myself."
He pulled out his phone.
Instinctively, Chloe grabbed his hand.
If Preston looked into it, he would definitely find her Visa Approval Notification and the UN employment contract!
She knew that if he found out, he would never agree to the divorce.
She already had a backup plan. Once she was out of the country and they had been separated for two years, she would hire the best lawyer to file for divorce.
Anyway, once she reclaimed her identity as Caroline Monet, Chloe Reed would cease to exist. No one would ever find her again.
