"Pres—"
Belle had just stood up, a shout already forming on her lips, when she got a clear look at the person standing next to him. She froze.
Her expression morphed instantly, and she scoffed in disgust.
"Why the hell is he with her?"
Chloe followed her line of sight.
On the antique wooden staircase, a man stood with a tall, relaxed posture. He wore a minimalist sweater that perfectly accentuated his broad shoulders and long legs, radiating an air of lazy elegance.
The woman beside him wore a matching sweater, taking overly energetic, bouncy steps up the stairs.
"Preston, thank you so much for bringing me out to relax! Lunch is on me today, so you have to eat a lot. That way you'll have plenty of energy for this afternoon, hehe!"
As Preston reached the top of the landing, his gaze instinctively flicked toward the window.
Right before their eyes could meet, Jenna suddenly let out a dramatic shriek.
"Ah—!"
She rolled her ankle and collapsed squarely into Preston's arms.
"Are you okay?" Preston asked.
Jenna clung to him tightly, practically whimpering. "It hurts so much. That scared me to death."
"Preston, I'm so clumsy. Thank God you're here."
"Let's go sit over there," Preston said. "I'll take a look at it for you."
"Okay~"
Leaning heavily against him, the two of them shuffled toward the opposite side of the dining area.
The spectacle immediately drew the attention of the surrounding tables.
A few people recognized them and started whispering.
"Isn't that the CEO of Vantage Group? I think that's his wife next to him."
"You know, the internet wasn't exaggerating. They really are obsessed with each other. It's like a romance novel come to life."
"I don't care who he dates, but why her?! Just looking at Jenna Cameron makes my skin crawl!"
"I honestly think Preston needs to get his eyes checked. Someone needs to book him an appointment with a specialist!"
Chloe smiled faintly. "You know Jenna?"
"Duh!"
Just hearing the name made Belle look as though she'd swallowed a fly.
"She was the ringleader of those mean girls who always bullied you! She was a total delinquent, skipping class, acting like one of the guys to get attention—she's an absolute bitch!"
"She has a pretty face, sure, but I have no idea what Preston sees in her. No matter how you look at it, she doesn't hold a candle to you! It pisses me off so much!"
Chloe hadn't realized Jenna went to the same high school.
But knowing Jenna's behavior, she wasn't surprised in the slightest.
Belle's sheer loathing for the woman was reaching a boiling point the longer she ranted.
"Now that I think about it, her classroom was right next to ours. So Preston was walking by to see her? Oh my god. I can't believe he was into her that early on. He's totally blind! Ugh!"
