After all, she had endured more than enough hostility growing up. She thought she had forged an impenetrable suit of armor.
But at this moment, tears burned her eyes, and her voice began to choke up. She realized that the wounds she thought had faded away were actually buried deep in her heart.
Fighting back the overwhelming wave of grief, she turned away from him.
Preston's warm hands gently grasped her shoulders, pulling her into an embrace as he softly tried to soothe her.
"Chloe, you need to focus on the happy things. Don't always dwell on the negativity."
"So it's my fault again?"
Tears welled up in her eyes as she shoved him away forcefully.
Preston let out a helpless sigh. "That's not what I meant..."
"That's exactly what you meant! Preston, your eyes are full of judgment. You don't understand why I'm upset, so you just think I'm being irrational!"
Preston looked at her quietly, his Adam's apple bobbing, but he didn't say a word.
A freezing despair settled over Chloe's heart, and a profound sense of helplessness threatened to drown her.
Everyone thought the same thing.
That she lived a privileged life.
That she was incredibly lucky.
That she had struck gold by marrying into a wealthy family...
And if she ever dared to feel pain, it just meant she was an ungrateful hypocrite!
But once upon a time, she believed Preston understood her.
Otherwise, why hadn't he simply handed her a wad of cash from his high horse back then?
Instead, he had offered her a work-study opportunity, giving her the chance to support herself through her own hard work while protecting her fragile pride.
But looking back now, she realized she had been wrong from the very beginning.
"Preston, we have nothing left to say to each other."
"At the end of the day, our values are completely incompatible. We should never have gotten together in the first place."
Chloe dodged his hand, her voice completely flat.
"Preston, whether you believe it or not, when two people can't even manage basic communication, the relationship is over."
"Dragging it out will only drain us both. What's the point?"
Preston froze.
Without sparing him another glance, Chloe strode away.
After entering Oceanview Heights, she took a few detours to ensure no one was following her before heading up to her floor.
Before getting into the elevator, she stopped to speak with security, giving them a brief description of Preston.
The guard assured her that if he saw the man, he would notify her immediately.
Chloe thanked him. Just as she stepped into the elevator, Dr. Sharpe suddenly called her.
"Chloe, aren't you curious why I ended up choosing Jenna as my assistant?"
