Chloe lowered her eyes, her hand pausing over the elevator buttons.
"You must have your reasons for choosing whoever you want."
She knew her mentor well enough to understand that no amount of power or influence could sway her decision unless she wanted it to.
Which meant she had actively chosen Jenna.
A soft chuckle came through the phone from Dr. Sharpe.
"Chloe, you will only ever be my protégé, never my assistant."
Honestly, she hadn't expected the candidate Preston pushed forward to be Chloe herself.
That was why she had ultimately gone with Jenna.
On one hand, she wanted to see what kind of person dared to bully her prized student.
And on the other hand...
"Chloe," Dr. Sharpe's voice took on an authoritative tone. "If you still want to reclaim your identity as Caroline Monet, you need to cut ties with the past as soon as possible."
"I don't care how you do it, I only care about the results. With your capabilities, this shouldn't be a difficult task."
"Don't worry. I'll have everything handled within a week," Chloe replied sharply.
Dr. Sharpe didn't say anything else and ended the call.

[I know you've been hurt. You can tell me anything, and we can communicate properly. Don't keep it all bottled up.]
Chloe simply swiped out of the chat, ignoring his messages.
Undeterred, Preston sent one last text:
Chloe shook her head to banish the weird thought and quickly grabbed a pair of slippers for him.
"Quentin, how did you find the time today?"
Honestly, his timing was impeccable.
Chloe had actually been really excited about the food at the exhibition, but because of all the drama, she hadn't gotten to taste much of it.
Right now, she was actually starving.
Quentin set out the food on the table, his long, elegant fingers handing her a fork.
"Chloe, Dr. Sharpe knows what she's doing."
Chloe caught on immediately and smiled. "Did you come over specifically to keep me company because you thought I'd be too sad to eat?"
"Don't worry, I'm not sad at all. Who knows, maybe my mentor only chose her as an assistant to get revenge for me!"
She said it lightly, but she honestly didn't think that was the case.
After all, knowing Dr. Sharpe's strictly professional demeanor, she wouldn't do something like that.
Seeing that Chloe was in good spirits, Quentin relaxed a little and said casually,
