The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 195

"It's you?!"

Nurse Brenda, who had just walked in for her rounds, stared at Chloe with wide, shocked eyes.

Chloe looked back at her.

The nurse wheeled her cart over and explained,

"You probably don't remember me, but I remember you so well. Back then, you were just a young girl, running into this room every single day, out of breath and covered in sweat, just to help bathe and massage Annelise. It couldn't have been easy for you."

"I used to think you were her daughter. But before I ever got the chance to ask, I was transferred to a small-town clinic."

"It's such a coincidence. I was just transferred back yesterday. I can't believe it's been over ten years, and you're still coming here!"

Brenda tilted her head curiously. "So, what's your relationship with her?"

Before Chloe could answer, Ken's surprised voice rang out from behind her.

"Mrs. Hayes? So this is where you are."

Brenda looked at Chloe, realization dawning on her face before a bright smile formed.

She whispered, "I saw Mr. Hayes today. No wonder you had a crush on him from such a young age."

"You two make a beautiful couple. Congratulations."

Chloe couldn't even begin to describe the emotions swirling inside her.

She remained silent, simply turning around and heading for the door.

Ken stood in the doorway, looking incredibly relieved to see her.

"I couldn't reach you by phone. Mr. Hayes was really worried."

"He's waiting for you right now..."

"I'm not here visiting my mother-in-law as Preston's wife," Chloe said flatly.

"I just..."

She turned back to look at the figure in the bed.

In truth, when she first started visiting Annelise all those years ago, it was simply because she had heard about the tragedy and wanted to do something—anything—to help Preston.

She had read in medical books that talking to comatose patients could increase their chances of waking up.

"Just for today... could you stay by his side?"

"Do you really think he needs my company?"

Chloe's eyes dimmed. She clenched her hands but didn't break her stride.

Watching her walk away, Ken hesitated, his hand lingering over his phone.

"..."

He quickly caught up to her. "It's late. Let me drive you back."

Before Chloe could refuse, he added,

"Not on Mr. Hayes's orders, but for your own safety. The men who were tailing you today have been dealt with, but whoever is behind them won't give up so easily."

Chloe paused in surprise. "Men tailing me?"

"Didn't Mr. Hayes tell you?" Ken asked. "They were taken down at the subway station."

Chloe suddenly remembered the details from earlier—Preston acting nonchalant, though his breathing had been slightly ragged.
