"It's entirely possible."
After they finished their meal, he took a phone call and had to leave.
Chloe couldn't help but say, "Don't push yourself too hard. Health comes first."
"I know," Quentin replied. "Rest assured, I'll have all the affairs here wrapped up before we head abroad."
Right before leaving, he reminded her again,
"Chloe, try not to go out too much lately. Be careful. The people at Rowan Industries might try to retaliate again, and Julian is extremely treacherous."
Chloe nodded. "Thanks for the warning. I'll be careful."
After seeing Quentin off, she dove into her work.
Remembering the slight disappointment in Dr. Sharpe's eyes, she couldn't stop revising her documents over and over again. She worked deep into the night until she unknowingly fell asleep on the couch...
She was jolted awake by her ringing phone.
It was already the next day, and the sun was shining brightly.
Chloe rubbed her stiff neck and grabbed her phone. Her brow furrowed when she saw the caller ID.
Preston had called her five or six times in a single morning.
She knew exactly what he wanted.
But they were about to get divorced. She had no reason to go with him.
Chloe powered off her phone.
She pulled out the new phone she had prepared earlier and inserted a brand-new SIM card.
It was the phone she had set up for moving abroad, and she had only added Quentin and Dr. Sharpe's contact information.
Then, she sent her completed files over to Dr. Sharpe.
A message came back almost immediately:
[Not bad.]
Chloe typed back: [Dr. Sharpe, are there any other tasks for me?]
Dr. Sharpe: [No. Get some rest for now.]
Chloe set her phone down and looked out the window.
The ocean visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows shifted from crystal blue to a dull gray.
Her time was always short. She had a part-time job to get to, so she never had much time to linger.
She always rushed in and sprinted right back out.
Chloe gently pushed open the ward doors. After making sure no one was around, she slipped into the room.
She placed the flowers in the vase.
The quiet room was filled only by the rhythmic beeping of the life-support machines, proving that the woman who had been asleep for over a decade was still alive.
"Happy birthday, Mrs. Hayes."
Under the soft lighting, the woman's features—which shared a faint resemblance to Preston's—looked peaceful, her skin deathly pale.
Out of habit, Chloe took the woman's frail arm and expertly massaged the muscles to keep them from atrophying.
"Mrs. Hayes, Preston and I are getting a divorce."
"Once I leave this time, we probably won't ever see each other again."
"But I still hope you wake up soon."
