"Hello, we're here to finalize our divorce."
The clerk behind the window looked up at the sound of her voice and paused when she saw the two of them.
Slipping into her professional demeanor, she asked, "Do you require mediation?"
Chloe replied, "No."
The clerk turned her gaze to Preston.
Preston smiled. "I listen to whatever my wife says."
The clerk's expression grew even more suspicious.
She had worked at the divorce registry for over a decade and saw countless couples every single day.
Most pairs were either deeply resentful, cursing each other out, or sobbing uncontrollably. As for the playful, smiling ones, she could spot them from a mile away—just a young couple having a lover's spat.
"Reason for divorce?"
Preston looked at Chloe. "Chloe, she's asking for the reason you don't want me anymore."
Chloe answered, "His best friend set me on fire."
The clerk gasped.
Chloe continued, "He pushed me down a flight of stairs."
The clerk's eyes widened.
Chloe added, "He hired people to kidnap me."
The clerk was horrified.
Chloe went on, "He also..."
"That's enough." The clerk looked at her with entirely new eyes, her gaze brimming with deep sympathy. "Miss, do you need me to call the police for you?"
Beside them, Preston's smile finally cracked.
"Chloe, those were..."
Chloe calmly added, "And he fell in love with his best friend. That is my reason for divorce."
This time, before Preston could utter another word, the clerk rapidly pounded her official stamps onto the paperwork with a loud clatter.
She handed the documents over and looked at Chloe.
"Miss, filing for divorce under these circumstances bypasses the mandatory waiting period. If he tries to back out, you can seek legal counsel at any time."
Preston remained speechless.
Stepping out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, the sunlight somehow felt more brilliant than before.
He was Quentin Shaw's man.
And as a fellow man, Preston knew exactly what kind of ulterior motives Quentin was harboring.
Ken didn't dare press further, only murmuring respectfully.
"Mr. Hayes, Miss Cameron is looking for you. She said..."
"I'm not seeing her." Preston opened the car door and slid into the backseat.
"Whatever she needs, handle it yourself. Just fix the problem."
"Understood."
...
"Quentin, how do you plan on thanking me?"
The moment Gabriel's call connected, he couldn't help but boast cheerfully.
"I definitely did you a massive favor this time, didn't I?"
Quentin said flatly, "Get to the point."
Gabriel laughed, his tone meaningful. "Don't think I don't know how you feel about Miss Reed..."
