Preston's bruised, bleeding hand was left hovering awkwardly in mid-air.
There had been three men on the other side. Julian was badly beaten, but Preston hadn't exactly emerged unscathed.
"Chloe, wait for me."
Preston caught up to her. "Let me explain. Tonight..."
Chloe turned her head and looked at him. "I don't need an explanation."
"Whatever you do is your own business. It has absolutely nothing to do with me."
"I only came here to fulfill an obligation and give Grandma some peace of mind."
Julian followed closely out of the police station, gently rubbing the bruises on his cheek as he beamed at Chloe.
"Miss Reed, you and Preston truly have a wonderful relationship."
"I merely mentioned your name, and a man who is usually so calm lost his temper completely, even risking a trip to the precinct over it."
Preston stepped protectively in front of Chloe, glaring icily at Julian.
"If you ever dare approach her again, I don't mind putting you in a hospital bed for the rest of your life."
Julian smiled, a deeply meaningful glint in his eyes.
Chloe aggressively shoved Preston away and spoke with freezing clarity.
"Mr. Sterling, I believe you are mistaken."
"Preston and I finalized our divorce today. Whatever actions he takes are purely to protect his own ego, or perhaps he's just in a foul mood. It has absolutely nothing to do with me."
"Chloe?" A flash of sheer disbelief crossed Preston's eyes.
He never imagined that Chloe would explain herself to Julian, drawing a ruthless boundary between them right in front of him without a second of hesitation.
Her icy, detached tone felt like a physical blade plunging into his chest, carving out an agonizing pain.
Suddenly, he recalled the photograph Julian had sent him on the day he left for Kandaria.
In the picture, the two of them were standing beneath a maple tree, their proximity dangerously close. He didn't know what they were discussing, but the angle made them look incredibly intimate.
"Chloe, do you have any idea what kind of man he is?"
She pulled the car door shut. "Quentin, I'm so sorry for causing you so much trouble tonight."
"You were never this polite to me before."
Quentin casually turned the steering wheel, his tone light. "Or have you simply slipped into your new role that quickly, Assistant Reed?"
Chloe was momentarily speechless.
She had almost forgotten. In four days, she would officially become Quentin's assistant.
"After tonight, Julian Sterling definitely won't let this go. For the time being, do not go out alone."
Hearing that, Chloe fought the overwhelming urge to strangle Preston.
Julian had clearly engineered the entire confrontation just to test Preston's stance on her.
She had no idea what kind of psychotic break Preston was suffering from to drag things out to this extent, but thanks to him, Julian was undoubtedly going to hound her now.
Thankfully, in four days, she would be leaving for good.
