"Are you absolutely sure about this?"
Quentin looked at her. "Knowing Preston's personality, he won't let you go so easily."
"He can't stop me."
Chloe smiled. "Besides, I'm not that important to him."
His profound devotion and his tender care—it was all just an act to convince himself of his own nobility.
Regardless of who he had married all those years ago, he would have done the exact same thing.
She had realized that painful truth a long time ago.
"Alright," Quentin said. "If you need anything, call me anytime."
"Don't worry. I'll show you exactly how demanding I can be. Don't go complaining that I'm annoying you later."
Quentin smirked. "I look forward to it."
Quentin had to head back to the office to work late, so Chloe said her goodbyes and walked into Oceanview Heights alone.
Just as she approached the main gate, two dark figures suddenly lunged at her from the shadows.
Reacting instantly, she dodged to the side. The estate's security guards rushed forward, pinning the two assailants brutally against the pavement.
Agonized shrieks pierced the night sky.
"Ow, ow, ow! Let go of me! Are you insane?"
"Do you have any idea who I am? How dare you touch me!"
As soon as Chloe caught a clear glimpse of their faces, her expression darkened.
"Chloe! Tell them to let me go right now! You ungrateful brat, conspiring with outsiders against your own family!"
Linda Rivers was pinned to the ground with her wrists twisted behind her back, wailing in pain.
Beside her, Leon Rivers was howling in tandem. "Chloe, what are you spacing out for? Say something!"
Ever since Linda had faked an illness to trick her into signing those documents, both of them had seemingly vanished from the face of the earth, disappearing entirely from her life.
Seeing them suddenly materialize before her, the brief peace Chloe had managed to scrape together instantly evaporated into high-strung tension.
Staring at Chloe with greedy, intensely jealous eyes, she spat out her demand.
"Go tell Preston to transfer the deed to this apartment to Leon immediately."
"I won't rely on you to take care of me when I'm old. I'm counting on your cousin. You can't just leave us without a place to stay in Sterling Bay, can you?"
Chloe nodded straightforwardly. "Sure. You can go ask Preston yourself."
Linda hadn't expected her to agree so easily and eyed her with blatant suspicion.
"Are you serious? You're actually showing some sense today, you wretched girl."
"Of course I'm serious, assuming Preston agrees," Chloe replied evenly.
Preston's face flashed in Linda's mind, and a sudden shiver wrecked her spine.
Her son-in-law was exceptionally handsome and always appeared polite and mild-mannered, yet somehow, he was utterly terrifying.
"How could you expect an elder to go ask him? You have to do it!" Linda urged impatiently. "Just act sweet and coax him a little. If he's in a good mood, he'll definitely agree!"
She instantly yanked out her phone. "I'll call him right now, and you tell him!"
