After the meal, Chloe stared at the trellis in the yard, suddenly struck by an idea. "I want to build a swing."
Mr. Lynch paused. He started to say something, but swallowed the words back down.
"Alright."
They got right to work, spending the entire morning successfully building a swing.
Chloe sat on it, surrounded by morning dew and vibrant flowers. The sweet, crisp scent filled the air, and taking a deep breath was incredibly refreshing.
She pumped her legs gently, the swing soaring higher and higher.
In a daze, she remembered a wish she had written in her diary many years ago.
[If I could, I'd want to build a trellis in the yard and plant lots and lots of flowers.
Then I'd put a swing under the trellis, so I could swing toward the blue sky, surrounded by a sea of blossoms.]
It turned out making a wish come true was incredibly simple.
It also turned out that even when a wish came true, it didn't necessarily bring happiness.
Chloe's heart grew heavier and heavier.
Just then, Mr. Lynch's voice broke through the silence.
"Chloe, are you... leaving?"
Chloe looked at him. Her nose stung, and she nodded with difficulty.
"Mr. Lynch, I'm leaving. You have to take good care of yourself. Call me whenever you miss me, and I'll fly you over to stay with me, whether for a vacation or for good."
Mr. Lynch's eyes grew slightly red. "When are you leaving?"
"In a couple of days," Chloe replied softly.
Mr. Lynch silently turned his back to her, picked up the broom from the corner of the yard, and pretended to sweep as if everything was perfectly fine.
His thin, frail back looked even more hunched in the sunlight.
"Alright, that's good..." he muttered under his breath as he swept, his voice thick with unshed tears.
After sweeping for a long time, he finally set the broom down and went back into his room.
A moment later, he walked briskly back to Chloe and solemnly handed her a heavily wrapped bank card.
"When you're abroad, you make sure you take good care of yourself. Don't you worry about me, I've got everything I need right here."
Chloe quickly waved her hands, refusing to take it. "I have money. You keep this for yourself."
Mr. Lynch's eyes went wide with absolute sternness. "No! You have to take it!"
He had originally saved this money for his son.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you..."
Shaw Corporation's latest project was incredibly demanding, so Chloe didn't think too much of it and got straight to the point.
But when she mentioned Mr. Goodwin, she wasn't sure if it was just her imagination, but Rhonda's tone seemed to drop even lower.
"My dad went on a vacation abroad. He probably hasn't checked his phone."
"Abroad?" Chloe was a little surprised.
In her memory, Mr. Goodwin almost never traveled. Only his hometown ever made him feel secure.
She felt a small twinge of regret that she wouldn't be able to see him one last time before leaving the country, so she exchanged a few more pleasantries and hung up.
She then sent a text to Quentin, letting him know she would be staying at Verdant Peak until her departure.
He replied almost instantly.
[I'm here.]
?
A second later, the sound of a car engine shutting off echoed from outside the yard.
Chloe looked up, her gaze landing right on Quentin as he stepped out of his car and walked toward her.
