"How well do you even know him? Do you really trust him that much?"
"What kind of poison did he feed you? What exactly did he say to convince you to follow him halfway across the world?"
"Have you even stopped to think about your own safety out here? Did you spare a single thought for me, or for Grandma?"
Chloe shoved against his chest, but he was like a brick wall.
"Get the hell away from me! We are getting divorced! My life is absolutely none of your business!"
"Divorce?" Preston's eyes flashed with red-hot fury. "If you're going to act this recklessly, then I will absolutely never sign those papers! I won't stand by and watch you throw yourself into a fire pit!"
"You are the damn fire pit!" Chloe screamed back, finally losing her temper completely. "Preston, what gives you the right to stand there and preach to me?"
A sharp pang ripped through Preston's chest.
He gritted his teeth. "No matter what my standing is in your life, I am not going to sit back and watch you ruin yourself."
The elevator stopped at a random floor. He tightened his grip on her wrist—careful not to bruise her, but refusing to let her escape.
"Go submit your resignation. You are coming back home with me."
Chloe fought against him like a wild animal. "Why the hell would I do that? Get out of my face! I am not going anywhere with you!"
A crowd had already started to gather in the hallway, drawn by the commotion inside the elevator.
Preston took a deep breath, forcing his voice to soften.
"Just be good and listen to me, Chloe. You have no idea how dangerous it is out here. You don't know what the people who act so nice to you are secretly scheming."
"Just come home with me. Please?"
He paused, his tone dropping into a desperate plea.
"I admit, I was completely blind to your needs before. I listened to your translation the other day... You were incredible."
His own words stabbed him right in the heart.
She had always been incredible.
He was just too blind to see it.
"It's my fault. I messed up. I swear I will never neglect you again. When we get back, I can find you the best translation job in the entire city."
"You're too lonely out here by yourself. We can build a life together back home, okay?"
Chloe wrestled against his grip, refusing to yield. "Let go of me! I am never going back with you!"
Preston's fragile patience was dangling by a thread.
Just then, a figure shoved aggressively through the crowd.
Quentin Shaw ripped off his suit jacket, wrapping it protectively around Chloe's shoulders before stepping forward and burying his fist right into Preston's jaw.
"Are you deaf? Can't you hear her telling you no? Can't you see how terrified she is?"
But when she finally looked at Preston, all he saw was a suffocating wave of disgust.
Had she completely forgotten?
She used to hold him exactly like that.
Even when she was covered in her own blood, she would look up at him and ask, 'Are you hurt?'.
Now, she was saving those words for someone else.
Preston slowly lowered his trembling fist. His chest heaved violently.
He sucked in a ragged breath, his voice completely raw.
"Chloe, I know you're still furious with me."
"But there's a misunderstanding here, and I can explain everything to you later."
"Right now, you have to come back with me."
He stared at her, practically begging.
"I'll do anything you want. I swear it. But even if we are getting a divorce, I still have a responsibility to you."
"I will never, under any circumstances, sit back and watch you put yourself in danger. I have to make sure you are safe and secure."
