She took the vegetable basket from Rhonda's hands and gently nudged her toward the bedroom.
Rhonda didn't argue. She hadn't slept a full night in months.
After dinner, Chloe and Belle helped wash Mr. Goodwin up and carefully settled him into bed.
The village night was incredibly peaceful.
The cicadas hummed, a relentless lullaby in the dark.
Suddenly, a piercing screech shattered the quiet night.
Accompanied by the deafening roar of motorcycle engines, a chorus of obnoxiously loud teenage boys started yelling and cheering.
Every few seconds, heavy rocks pelted against the windows and exterior walls of the house.
Chloe scowled, standing up immediately to head outside.
But Rhonda grabbed her arm. "Don't go out there."
"Yeah, stay inside," Belle added anxiously. "I'm calling the cops right now."
Rhonda shook her head, a defeated, hollow look in her eyes.
"I've called them before. It doesn't do any good."
Chloe instantly sensed something was wrong. "Who are they?"
Outside, the shrill taunts echoed loudly.
"Hey, old man, you asleep already? Get up and play!"
"Who told you to go to sleep so early? Get out here!"
"Come on out, pretty lady! Stop hiding, we know you're in there!"
They hurled vile, disgusting insults without hesitation.
Chloe practically shot out of her chair.
But Rhonda pleaded, "They're just local delinquents. They started harassing us about a week ago. Just ignore them. They'll leave eventually..."
"What did the police say?" Chloe demanded.
Rhonda said bitterly, "They're all minors. Their parents don't care, so all the cops do is give them a warning and let them go."
Chloe pulled out her phone and started recording to gather evidence.
As she reached for the door handle, the motorcycles roared to life and sped off into the distance.
