Preston's voice came through faintly: "The sun hasn't even set yet. Why are you in bed?"
Chloe turned her back to him, ignoring him.
Preston seemed to realize something and let out a low chuckle, his tone laced with a knowing tease.
"Are you sure this is a good time to continue, right after you asked for a divorce?"
The comment came out of nowhere, completely baffling her.
It took Chloe a moment to process his words. When she did, she sat up abruptly, furious.
"Are you out of your mind? What goes on in that head of yours? Do you think everyone is as filthy-minded as you?"
Instead of getting angry at the insult, Preston's smile only deepened. "I haven't even said anything yet."
He walked toward the edge of the bed, resting one knee on the mattress, his dark eyes locked onto hers.
"You are still Mrs. Hayes for the next seven days. I can certainly satisfy that little request."
"Get the hell out!"
Chloe kicked at him with all her might, but he easily caught her ankle. With a firm pull, he dragged her right underneath him.
She had been in poor health lately and hadn't slept well the night before. The sudden movement made the room spin, and her vision went dark at the edges.
Preston frowned. "Are you not feeling well?"
Chloe closed her eyes to steady herself, her voice cold and hard. "It's none of your business. Get out."
Refusing to listen, Preston reached out and pressed his hand against her forehead. "I think you're just making yourself sick over pointless tantrums. Chloe, there has to be a limit to your temper."
She let out a cold laugh.
Yes, she really had wasted too much emotion and suffered far too many unnecessary grievances!
But from now on, she would never be that stupid again.
Just then, Jenna's impatient voice rang out from the hallway.
"Preston, are you ready? Didn't you say you were going to come right back and keep me company?"
Preston was about to speak, but Chloe beat him to it, her voice so calm it bordered on apathetic.
