The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 43

Chloe immediately tried to deny it.

She and Preston hadn't slept together in a long time. How could she possibly be pregnant?

But before she could speak, another wave of nausea hit her.

Seeing her reaction, Eleonora was almost entirely convinced. She hurriedly ordered the maid to call the family doctor.

As she helped Chloe to the main living room, her eyes sparkled with excitement as she imagined the possibilities.

Preston seemed distracted, his expression heavy with unreadable thoughts.

The doctor arrived shortly after.

Under Eleonora's expectant gaze, he pulled out his equipment and gave Chloe a thorough examination.

Jenna, who had just returned from a morning walk with Percival Hayes, saw the commotion and asked, "What's wrong with Mrs. Hayes?"

Eleonora beamed from ear to ear. "Our family is most likely having a baby!"

At those words, Jenna's face drastically changed, her facade crumbling. "What?!"

Realizing she had slipped, she quickly tried to cover it up. "That... that's so sudden. Preston has been so busy with work lately. I doubt he's ready to be a father..."

Percival's gaze toward Chloe instantly became incredibly complicated.

Under everyone's burning stares, the doctor finally finished his examination.

"Mrs. Hayes is not pregnant. The nausea is purely physiological, triggered by emotional stress. She just needs plenty of rest."

Hearing this, Preston visibly let out a sigh of relief.

His obvious relief didn't escape Chloe's notice, making her feel utterly ridiculous and bitter.

Was he really that terrified of her having his child?

The anticipation on Eleonora's face instantly collapsed into deep disappointment.

Preston stepped forward and put an arm around her, his tone light. "Grandma, are you really that desperate for a great-grandchild?"

Eleonora shot him a glare. "It's your own fault for not trying harder!"

With a brief goodbye to Eleonora, she turned and walked away.

Watching her disappear, Preston's expression darkened, and he quickly followed her outside.

By the time he reached the front gates, Chloe was already getting into a car.

Staring at the license plate—the exact same one Ken had noted down before—his gaze turned freezing cold.

...

"Quentin, thanks for going out of your way."

Chloe relaxed significantly once she was inside the car.

Quentin Shaw handed her a bento box, his tone casual. "Breakfast."

Chloe had no appetite and lied, "I already ate."

Quentin didn't budge. "Then have an extra meal. We have a heavy workload today."
