Chloe spun around and headed toward the main hall. She assumed Preston would walk away, but to her surprise, he matched her pace, tailing right behind her.
She snapped her head back and glared at him. "Why are you following me?"
Preston looked like he was in an excellent mood. The oppressive gloom that had shadowed his face for days had vanished.
"Ms. Reed, the venue is massive. It's perfectly normal for us to be heading in the same direction."
He deliberately leaned closer to her, a smirk playing on his lips. "What makes you think I'm following you?"
Quentin's call came through again, urging her to hurry.
Chloe took a step back, putting distance between them. "Don't you have your own business to attend to? I'm working, leave me alone!"
Catching onto her nerves with predatory sharpness, Preston arched an eyebrow. "You're awfully eager to get rid of me. Are you planning on doing something you shouldn't?"
He took a step closer. His tall frame loomed over her with an undeniable intensity, making it clear he wouldn't back off until he got what he wanted.
Backed into a corner, Chloe was utterly fed up. Just as she hit her breaking point and considered kicking him, a voice rang out.
"Mr. Hayes, there you are. I've been looking for you."
Mr. Lawson of Nexus Global approached with a wide smile. He was practically glowing, clearly relishing his popularity at the summit.
Preston had no choice but to mask his expression. He exchanged pleasantries with the man, and the conversation swiftly pivoted to business.
Seizing the opening, Chloe slipped away. She took the long route, sprinting desperately toward the interpreter's booth.
Halfway there, she nearly crashed into Quentin, who had come looking for her. Panting heavily, she gasped, "Sorry... a rabid dog blocked my path. I'm late."
Quentin calmly glanced at the man striding briskly toward them from a distance. "It's fine. You're right on time."
With that, he turned and walked side by side with Chloe.
Preston's gaze swept over the crowd, instantly locking onto the two figures ahead.
Shoulder to shoulder, standing uncomfortably close.
The pleasant, relaxed expression he had worn moments ago morphed into something terrifyingly dark.
