The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 69

Preston stood up quickly, tossing on his clothes. "Send me your location. Don't be afraid, I'll be right there."

Listening to his gentle, patient voice, Chloe snapped completely awake, pulling back from the edge of giving in to him.

Preston hung up his phone, walked to the edge of the bed, and pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. "Chloe, I need to take care of something. Get some sleep. Don't wait up."

She didn't say a word.

He paused mid-step, glancing back with a frown. "Are you mad?"

Before he could explain, Chloe's voice drifted through the darkness, devoid of any readable emotion. "No. Go ahead."

"You're really not mad?"

She was being too calm, which made him suspicious. Something felt off.

Chloe offered a faint smile. "Why would I be mad? You should hurry. It's late, and it isn't safe for a woman to be out alone."

Preston didn't overthink it. He pulled out his phone, transferred a large sum of money to her account, and said, "Mr. Lynch is getting older. It's not convenient for him to live out here at the foot of the mountain by himself. Use this money to help him pick out an apartment in town. When the time is right, I'll hire a crew to build a new house here."

With that, he hurried out the door.

Chloe glanced at the notification on her screen, staring at the string of zeros before her lips curled into a self-deprecating smile.

Did he actually care if she was mad?

He only did this because he felt guilty. He wanted a clear conscience, but he couldn't bear to let Jenna Cameron go. So, he threw money at Chloe to brush her off.

Whatever. It was fine.
