"Chloe, what's wrong? Are you hurt?"
Before Preston could finish, his phone buzzed frantically. He was about to decline the call, but seeing the name on the screen, he answered. Jenna's voice immediately spilled from the speaker.
"Preston, did you see the news? I can't believe Chloe would do something like this. Forging a martyr's identity? And now she's been completely exposed..."
Preston's brows crashed together. "What are you talking about? Did you do this?"
"Of course not! It looks like her own mother saw the news and was so disgusted she came forward to expose her. I just saw it and called you immediately. Finally, my brother's name can be cleared..."
"Get away from me!" Chloe violently shoved Preston away. "Don't touch me!"
Hearing the commotion, Mr. Lynch hurried outside, his face pale with worry. "What's going on? Chloe, are you alright?"
Chloe took a shuddering breath. "I'm fine. I just need to take a walk."
She forced her trembling legs to move. Just as she reached the road, Quentin's car pulled up. She got in without a second's hesitation.
Gabriel looked at her pale face, trying to comfort her. "Ms. Reed, don't worry. It's just a minor hiccup, everything will be fine..."
"Yeah."
Chloe choked back a sob, her throat painfully tight. Logically, she knew that with the physical evidence they had, Linda's slander wouldn't hold up in court. But she couldn't understand it. She just couldn't comprehend the cruelty. Linda had always favored boys. She had hated Chloe since she was born. Chloe had accepted that. But what about her dad? Yes, he was always away. Yes, he owed her a normal childhood. But he wrote her a letter every single month. He sent every last penny of his salary back home. How could his own wife return that sacrifice with such vicious, public destruction?
Quentin pulled the car over. "We're going to grab a few things. It might take a minute. Rest in the car."
