Chloe Reed's voice was completely flat, as if she were discussing the weather rather than her own life.

On the other end of the line, Jenna Cameron's tone grew frantic. "Drop the act, Chloe! I know you're dying inside right now. Just wait until the whole world turns on you and the Hayes family kicks you to the curb! When everyone is trampling all over you, let's see how high and mighty you act then!"

Chloe let out a soft, humorless laugh. "Jenna, I think you're confused. The ones about to face the wrath of the public aren't me. It's you and your brothers."

She paused, her tone dropping to a glacial chill. "If you're incompetent, don't play with fire. Since you clearly feel three years in prison isn't enough for your brother, I'll gladly grant your wish and add a few more years to his sentence."

Jenna shrieked, but Chloe didn't give her the chance to finish, cleanly cutting the call.

"Jenna, what did she mean by that? What did she mean by adding more years to my sentence?"

Jeremiah Gordon had been listening closely, a knot of dread tightening in his chest.

Jenna shot him a vicious glare. "Jeremiah! When did you become such a coward? Are you really going to let one sentence from her scare you like this?"

Gus Gordon, covered in bandages and slouched on the sofa scrolling through his phone, chimed in. "Exactly! Look at the internet right now. Everyone is ripping into the Reed family and taking our side. I didn't expect my future brother-in-law to be this effective..."

A greedy light flashed in his eyes. "Jenna, Preston beat me half to death. I won't press charges, but he owes me some compensation. Asking for a nice house in Kingsford isn't too much, is it?"

Jenna arched a brow. "What's one house? Once I'm Mrs. Hayes, I can have whatever I want!"

Right in the middle of her fantasy, Jeremiah's phone suddenly rang. The caller ID flashed: The County Magistrate.

Jeremiah jumped.

Jenna laughed. "Pick it up, Jeremiah. He's probably calling to reinstate your position."
