The Wife He Dumped, The Queen She Returned As novel Chapter 97

Preston met her fury with chilling calmness. "Jeremiah goes on trial tomorrow. I will make sure he rots in a cell. Gus has already been fired. Chloe, is that not enough for you?"

"Are you saying this is supposed to make up for what you did?"

Chloe looked at him like he had lost his mind.

"They broke the law! Them paying the price is basic justice! It is not a favor to me, and it certainly has nothing to do with whether I am 'satisfied' or not!"

Suddenly, the horrifying reality of his mindset clicked into place. The realization sent a freezing chill straight to her core, leaving a bitter, mocking smile on her lips.

"You think that just because you didn't bail Jenna out this time, you've somehow done right by me? Who the hell volunteers to be a victim? Can my father's memory and the disrespect he suffered just be wiped clean?"

"Preston, these were your choices, and they have absolutely nothing to do with me! I never once asked for your help!"

That final sentence finally shattered Preston's collected facade. His jaw locked in anger.

"Then who do you want help from? That interpreter and the lawyer he dug up?"

He surged to his feet, towering over the table. "Chloe, whether it's in Kingsford or Sterling Bay, he can't protect you! I am the only one who can protect you!"

Outside the private dining room, a group of waiters pushing a cart loaded with an extravagant cake, vintage wine, and luxury gifts hovered anxiously. Hearing the vicious argument inside, they exchanged terrified glances, paralyzed in the hallway.

Chloe took a jagged breath, forcing her voice to remain steady.

"Preston. I am going to ask you one last time. Are you going to sign the papers or not?"

"Chloe, if you want something, just say it. There's no need to play these twisted games."

The last trace of gentleness vanished from Preston's face, replaced by a dark, obsessive possessiveness.

"Anything you want in this world, I can buy it or steal it for you! You don't need to test my devotion, and you certainly don't need to throw these ridiculous, pointless tantrums!"

"I will only ever have one wife in this lifetime. Whatever kind of husband you want, I will be it!"

His words made Chloe feel physically nauseous.
