The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 111

It suddenly dawned on Yulen why Winona had been so hostile lately. She was jealous. He resolved to explain everything clearly when they got home. When they had first gotten together, there were always baseless rumors about his escapades, and a simple explanation was always enough for her to trust him. This time, however, she seemed stuck on it. He figured it was because she’d spent too much time shut away at home over the past few years, giving herself too much time to overthink.

Seeing Yulen’s gaze fixed on Winona, Tallulah’s dissatisfaction grew.

After the dinner party ended, the group left the restaurant. Yulen had taken a call midway through the meal and had already left with Tallulah. Winona couldn't have cared less where they went.

She hailed a cab and had just settled in when her phone rang. It was Yulen. "Winona, I’m almost done here. I’m about to head back. Wait for me at the restaurant, and I'll pick you up."

"Don't bother. You handle your business," Winona said coolly. "I'm already in a car."

"Okay, then. I'll see you at home."

Winona hung up and stared out at the passing city lights.

A moment later, the driver took a call and then turned to her, his voice frantic. "I'm so sorry, miss, but that was my wife. She said my son has food poisoning and I have to get to the hospital right now. Look, I won't charge you for the ride. Could you please get out and hail another cab?"

Given the emergency, Winona had no choice but to get out. Unfortunately, she was in an area where cabs were scarce. After waiting for half an hour with no luck, she thought of Yulen’s offer. Never turn down a free driver, she thought, and dialed his number.

For all his grand promises, the call went straight to voicemail.

She laughed at her own foolishness. What did she expect? That he would actually come for her?

Just then, a black Maybach glided through the traffic and pulled up beside her.

"Mr. Goddard, it’s a relief to run into you. Thank you for the ride," Winona said. The wind had left the tip of her nose red with cold.

As the warmth of the car enveloped her, she let out an involuntary sneeze.

Stefan handed her a tissue. As she took it, her fingers brushed against his, and she flinched back as if burned. He seemed not to notice and simply instructed the driver to move.

Winona dabbed at her nose. Seeing that he had been drinking, she assumed he was tired and wanted to get home. "Mr. Goddard, if it's inconvenient, you can just drop me off where it's easier to get a cab or near a subway station."

"It's no trouble," he replied.

He had received an unwelcome phone call earlier that evening, and a low pressure seemed to emanate from him. For some reason, Winona could sense his foul mood in his voice. Remembering that she still owed him dinner, she ventured, "Mr. Goddard, are you free tomorrow night? I'd like to treat you to dinner."
