A wave of nausea washed over Winona, a familiar symptom of her pregnancy. She opened the refrigerator, looking for an orange.
Just then, the electronic lock on the front door beeped, and Paige walked in, carrying her purse. She had come to retrieve a toy her son had left behind.
Seeing Winona at home, she let out a scornful laugh. “I thought you were finally serious about getting a job and doing something with yourself. You didn’t even last a few days. Pathetic.”
Winona lowered her eyes, saying nothing. She grabbed an orange from the fridge, planning to thaw it and make juice.
Irritated by Winona’s indifference, Paige snapped, “Don’t just stand there. Make me a cup of coffee.”
Winona didn’t move. She had no desire to engage with Paige and turned to head back to her room.
Paige grabbed her arm, stopping her. “What’s your problem? I’m Yulen’s sister. Is it so much to ask you to do one simple thing? Don’t forget—you’re living off my family’s money!”
At that moment, Yulen emerged from his study. Frowning, he said, “Paige, don’t talk to Winona like that.”
Paige released Winona’s arm with a huff. “I know, I know. You can’t stand anyone saying a single bad word about her.”
Another surge of nausea rose in Winona’s throat. She clapped a hand over her mouth and ran to the bathroom, where she dry-heaved over the toilet.
When she came out after rinsing her mouth, she found Paige staring at her with a suspicious gaze. Winona’s heart skipped a beat.
As a mother herself, Paige’s intuition was sharp. “You’re not pregnant, are you?” she asked.
Yulen’s eyes also shifted to Winona. “Should we go to the hospital and get you checked out?”
Winona dug her nails into her palm, forcing herself to remain calm. “How could I be?” she said with a small laugh. “You know my health better than anyone. My stomach has just been upset lately, that’s why I’ve been feeling sick.”
Paige pursed her lips. “True. If you were ever going to get pregnant, it would’ve happened by now.”
She handed him the phone.
“I’ve hired the best lawyer in Riverton to handle Helena’s case,” Yulen said gently into the phone. “She’ll be out before you know it.”
He comforted Nikita a little longer before hanging up. Then he turned to Winona. “I’ll go with you to see Nikita tomorrow to help put her mind at ease.”
“Okay,” Winona nodded.
Seeing her gentle, obedient expression, Yulen reached out to stroke her hair, but Winona flinched away instinctively. She couldn’t stand his touch anymore; it was more sickening than her morning sickness.
Yulen’s hand froze in mid-air, a dull ache settling in his chest. He felt that their relationship was no longer as intimate as it once was, as if an invisible barrier stood between them.
It must be because they don’t have a child, he reasoned. Once they had a baby, their bond would become unbreakable. He made a decision then and there. Tonight, they would try again.
