The Wife He Forgot to Marry novel Chapter 112

Stefan nodded. "Yes. As it happens, I have something to ask of you as well."

"What is it?" Winona asked, her curiosity piqued.

"You'll find out then."

Knowing so little about him, Winona couldn't begin to guess what he might need her for, so she didn't press the matter.

When they arrived at her apartment building, she moved to get out, but Stefan stopped her, holding out a wool shawl. "Put this on. The wind is strong."

He seemed so aloof, she thought, but he was more of a gentleman than anyone she knew.

After thanking him, she draped the shawl over her shoulders and stepped out of the car. Wrapped in its thick, soft warmth, she barely felt the bite of the night wind.

She had come back to her own apartment. As expected, Yulen didn't call. He was undoubtedly with Tallulah.

It was for the best. The last thing she wanted was for him to have free time to bother her.

Later that night, Winona scrolled through Tallulah’s Twitter and saw a picture of her in a hospital bed. It was accompanied by a long, melodramatic post that could be summarized in one point: she was having contractions due to emotional distress. Probably from the verbal lashing she'd received at dinner, Winona mused. She deserved it.

Just then, her aunt Helena called. "Winona, I'm starting at a different branch hospital tomorrow. It's quite far—a two-hour commute. If anything comes up at home, I need you to keep an eye on things."

Winona found this strange. Helena had been doing well at her hospital, so a sudden transfer made no sense. Her gut told her the Locke family was behind it.

Swallowing her fury, Winona agreed. "Fine. I promise it won't happen again."

"Good," Camille said, clearly pleased by her obedience. "You're a smart girl. In that case, Helena will be at that branch for two weeks at most before she's brought back."

Lying in bed later, Winona felt a suffocating weight on her chest. The Lockes were ruthless, and for now, she had no real way to fight them.

Suddenly, she remembered what Mr. Harper had said earlier. He wanted her to participate in the lab's upcoming core project in the capital. If it succeeded, she would receive a handsome bonus. With that money, she would no longer be at the mercy of the Lockes. She could take Helena, Nikita, and Greta and leave Riverton for a fresh start in the capital.

For now, she just had to endure a little longer.
