Phoebe cast a sideways glance at Karina, her tone laced with biting sarcasm. "We both seem to have terrible luck today. Every time we step out, we step in the same piece of trash."

Karina bristled instantly. "Who are you calling trash?!"

Back when they first met, Phoebe had held back to avoid scaring her daughter. Now, flying solo, she had no such reservations.

"Whoever answers, I suppose. I've heard of foot-binding in the old days, but brain-binding? That's a new one. Truly eye-opening."

Winona let out a genuine laugh.

Karina's face turned a mottled, furious purple.

Winona handed over her own credit card to finalize the purchase. The sales associate hurriedly wrapped the gifts, praying the two of them would just leave.

Carrying her bags, Winona walked out of the store alongside Phoebe.

Karina glared daggers at the associate. "Didn't we agree you wouldn't sell to her?"

The associate looked like she was on the verge of tears but didn't dare argue. Karina cursed her out a few more times before storming off.

Outside, learning that Winona was about to head back to Riverton, Phoebe insisted, "I told you I was going to invite you over for dinner! You can't leave this fast. If you don't have plans for lunch, why don't you come to my place?"

Unable to decline such warm hospitality, Winona agreed.

On the way over, Phoebe filled her in on her in-laws. "My father-in-law is a pharmacy professor at Apex University, and my mother-in-law is a doctor. My husband and sister-in-law are doctors too. They can be a bit traditional and strict, but they're wonderful people."
