Back at her apartment, Winona added the director, Mr. Clark, on WhatsApp. He accepted her request quickly but was too busy to reply to her message. Winona knew she would have to wait until he was free to discuss the project.
On Saturday morning, Winona went to visit Nikita. Her grandmother’s spirits were a little better, and she was propped up in bed, chatting.
Winona fed her some fruit and gently wiped her face and hands. Nikita brought up the topic of children again. “Winona, you and Yulen need to have a child soon. If I could hear that you were pregnant before I go, I would be so happy. Then I could face your father when I see him on the other side.”
“Grandma, don’t say such things,” Winona said, forcing a smile. “Medical science is advancing so quickly. They might develop a cure any day now…”
Nikita shook her head. “I know my own body. I don’t have many wishes left, other than seeing all of you find happiness and build a family.”
Winona lowered her head, her heart growing heavier.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Willow.
She stepped out of the hospital room to answer.
“Winona,” Willow said, “Wynne and I are at the Aether Club, playing cards and having coffee. You have the day off, right? Come join us.”
Winona wasn’t eager to go. “I have something to do today…”
Before she could finish, Willow cut her off, annoyed. “Wynne won’t be in Riverton for much longer, and our project with the Powell Group still isn’t secured. If you’re not going to suck up to her now, when are you going to do it?”
Left with no choice, Winona agreed and made her way to the Aether Club.
When she arrived, she discovered it was a members-only establishment. Without a membership card, she couldn't get in.
She called Willow, but after two attempts, there was no answer. Fearing that if she left, Willow and Camille would use it as another excuse to cause trouble for Helena at work, she had no choice but to wait by the entrance.
An hour passed with no word from Willow. Just then, Stefan and Ophelia emerged from the club.
Seeing her, Ophelia asked, “Winona, are you still waiting here? My mom and Willow left over half an hour ago to go to the spa.”
Ophelia quickly regained her composure, offering a warm, generous smile. “Yes, it’s much better if we all go together. Come on, let’s get in.”
She took Winona’s arm, led her to the car, and steered her into the front passenger seat before sliding into the back with Stefan. The driver started the car.
“Winona,” Ophelia suddenly asked, “you and Yulen seem so close. When did you two meet?”
Winona didn’t want to answer. Her relationship with Yulen was long dead, and looking back now only made her feel foolish.
Seeing her silence, Ophelia laughed. “Are you shy? Oh, I really envy you two.”
Suddenly, the driver slammed on the brakes. Winona was thrown forward by the inertia.
“A cat just ran across the road,” the driver said, his voice shaky. “It startled me. Is everyone alright?”
