“Thank you, but my work is going well. I don’t need any help from Mr. Goddard.”
The housekeeper brought out snacks and fruit, and Violet insisted she have some.
Violet picked up a photo album from the sofa and pointed to a picture of three children. “This is Stefan with his younger brother and sister,” she said.
Winona looked at the photo of a seven- or eight-year-old Stefan, thinking his serious expression even back then wasn’t so different from how he was now.
Violet continued, “Their parents were always preoccupied with their own affairs and never had time for the children, so the three of them were mostly raised by us. Stefan used to be quite a lively boy, but my old man taught him to act like a little adult, which wasn't nearly as cute. A few years ago, his younger brother, Evander, had an accident. They were very close, and Stefan was despondent for a long time afterward. That, combined with the burden of the Goddard family, is what made him so quiet and reserved. But he’s actually a very gentle person and cares deeply for his family. You’ll see that in time.”
Listening to Violet, Winona slowly began to understand Stefan’s past. She had always imagined him as a golden boy who had a smooth ride through life, but she never realized that beneath his brilliant exterior lay so much hidden pain.
“Mr. Stefan Goddard is back.”
At the housekeeper’s announcement, Violet huffed. “I was beginning to think he was so buried in work he’d forgotten all about his old grandmother.”
A moment later, the sound of footsteps approached, and Winona turned to see Stefan walk into the living room. He was dressed in his usual impeccable black suit, his posture ramrod straight. His features were sharp, and he exuded an imposing aura of authority.
“Grandma,” he greeted Violet first, then his eyes shifted to Winona. “Ms. Jowett, you’re here.”
“I came to see Violet,” Winona said warmly, “and thought I’d drop off your jacket.”
