Seeing her flushed, embarrassed expression, Stefan simply smiled. He let the subject drop and asked with perfect gentlemanly politeness, "So, could I trouble you to make that pasta?"
She nodded and quickly escaped into the kitchen.
His refrigerator was fully stocked with fresh groceries, including several of her favorite snacks. Winona was thoroughly surprised.
However, she definitely didn't dare assume they had been bought specifically for her.
She pulled out the ingredients and began washing and chopping.
By the time the pasta was ready, she had completely regained her composure.
Since she wasn't hungry, she only made one serving.
"You're not eating?" Stefan asked.
"I already ate earlier."
Stefan picked up his fork and casually mentioned, "There are snacks in the fridge. Help yourself."
Deciding that sitting there watching him eat was a bit awkward, Winona grabbed a bag of beef jerky from the refrigerator.
It was an imported brand she always kept in her own fridge, but this particular bag tasted slightly different—somehow better.
"Where did you get this?" she asked.
Stefan glanced at the jerky in her hand. "I picked it up while I was overseas on a business trip."
When she had gotten drunk and he had taken her home, he had noticed the contents of her fridge. He had memorized her favorite foods with a single glance.
While abroad, he had spotted her go-to snacks on the shelves and couldn't resist buying them all.
Winona chewed the jerky thoughtfully. "No wonder it's so good. Getting it straight from the source really makes a difference."
Stefan let out a soft laugh. "If you like it, I'll have my assistant order some more for you."
"Oh, please don't go to the trouble," Winona said, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I can just order it online."
Stefan nodded, not pushing the issue.
Once he finished eating, Stefan cleared his plate and loaded it into the dishwasher himself.
Holding the half-eaten bag of jerky, Winona prepared to say her goodbyes. "I should get going."
Stefan gave a noncommittal hum.
Hearing that she was leaving, a half-asleep Biscuit let out a pathetic whimper, trotted over, and gently bit down on her slipper.
