Stefan's brow furrowed deeply. Maeve's mental state was deteriorating rapidly. She was fully detached from reality now, living in a delusion.
He gestured to the security detail standing a few feet away. "Have her escorted back to the Capital immediately."
"No! I'm not leaving!" Maeve shrieked, thrashing wildly as the guards grabbed her arms. "You can't get rid of me, Stefan! I'm going to fight for our love!"
At that moment, Margaret and Mrs. Mallory rushed into the gallery, drawn by the commotion.
"Stefan! Tell them to let her go right now!" Margaret ordered sharply.
Mrs. Mallory pushed past the guards, wrapping her arms protectively around her daughter. She stroked Maeve's hair, soothing her, before turning desperate eyes to Stefan. "Stefan, I am begging you. Please just be kind to her. Look at how sick she is—how can you be so cruel? For the sake of Kieran saving your life all those years ago, just humor her. Please."
Maeve clung to her mother, sobbing like a toddler whose toy had been snatched away. "Mom, this homewrecker is trying to steal Stefan! Make her go away! Stefan is my soulmate! He belongs to me!"
Stefan took a slow, steadying breath, completely ignoring their tears. He looked directly at his mother. "Mom, every time you feed into her delusions, you're making her sicker. I told you before: what she needs isn't me. She needs a team of psychiatric professionals. Sending her abroad for intensive treatment is the only thing that will help her. If you refuse to listen, then I have nothing left to say."
Margaret, deeply invested in maintaining her alliance with the Mallory family, found Stefan's clinical logic appalling. "Do you hear yourself? You sound like a monster! You and Maeve grew up together! Have you forgotten how close you used to be? Even if you don't marry her, you should treat her like a sister and help her fight this illness!"
"Exactly!" Mrs. Mallory pleaded. "We aren't asking for much. Just visit her. Spend time with her. Treat her like family. I'm sure your future wife will be understanding! Maeve is so sick, she can't exactly compete for your affection anyway!"
At the word 'wife,' something inside Maeve snapped. With a feral scream, she lunged at Winona, her hands raised like claws, aiming straight for her face.
