Roxana had been busy the previous night and missed the gallery opening. She had no idea Winona had been attacked by Maeve, let alone that her brother's budding romance had been killed before it even officially started.

Stefan's voice was completely deadpan. "Biscuit was returned. Ms. Jowett informed me she doesn't have the time to help take care of him anymore."

Roxana frowned at his formal tone. *Ms. Jowett?* Why was he being so passive-aggressive? Did they get into a fight?

She immediately jumped to Winona's defense. "Stefan, Winona is the sweetest person alive. If you managed to make her mad, you definitely did something horribly wrong. Men have too much pride. You need to drop your ego and go apologize to her right now!"

Stefan sank onto the sofa without a word, staring blankly ahead.

Violet, piecing together the tension, walked over, her face lined with concern. "Stefan, what happened with Winona? Did you say something stupid and scare her off?"

Margaret, thoroughly irritated that both her mother-in-law and daughter were siding with Winona, snapped, "Mom, Roxana, what is wrong with you two? Why are you defending that girl? Someone of her social standing has no business being with Stefan anyway!"

Violet slammed her cane against the floor. "What do you know about anything? When choosing a wife, character is the only thing that matters! Look at the women you're trying to force on him—Maeve is dangerously paranoid, and Ophelia Powell is a manipulative social climber! You actually think they are fit to be part of the Goddard family?"

Margaret crossed her arms defensively. "Maeve is just sick! You can't blame her for that. And Ophelia is elegant, brilliant, and capable. She is miles above Winona Jowett. You're just biased against me, Mom!"

She turned to Stefan, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Stefan, I don't care how far along you were with Winona. It's over. As soon as Ophelia recovers from her injury, the two of you are getting engaged."
