Given Forrest's age and the time and location he had been abandoned, the likelihood of him being the missing son was incredibly high.
But if Winona rashly suggested a DNA test, Forrest—with his deep-seated resentment toward his biological parents—would absolutely refuse. Her best bet was to secretly snag a strand of his hair and run the test herself.
After dinner, she slipped into the bathroom, plucked a single strand of hair from Forrest's comb, wrapped it carefully in a tissue, and tucked it into her pocket.
Leaving Forrest's place, Winona got into Simone Sterling's car. Simone spent the entire drive agonizing over how much her heart ached for him. Winona mostly tuned it out, her mind elsewhere. It wasn't until she got home that she finally pulled out her phone and called Wynne.
"Winona, did you need something?"
Hearing the airport boarding announcements in the background, Winona asked in surprise, "Are you leaving Riverton?"
Wynne's voice trembled with excitement. "Yes, I'm heading to Yelden Country. The private investigator I hired tracked down the family that adopted my children. I've seen the photos, Winona. Those two kids... they look exactly like I did when I was young."
Winona froze. If Wynne had already found her son and daughter in Yelden Country, then Forrest couldn't possibly be her child.
She managed a soft smile. "I just wanted to check in and see how you were doing. I'm so happy for you. I hope you're reunited with them soon."
"Thank you, dear."
After hanging up, Winona pulled the tissue from her pocket and tossed the strand of hair into the trash can.

Sunday morning, Winona met up with Stefan and Roxana Goddard to hike Sunset Ridge.
Roxana suggested they spend the night at the hot spring resort at the summit after the hike, but Winona shook her head. "I have work to catch up on. After we grab lunch, I need to head home and get it done."
"Same here," Stefan agreed effortlessly.
Roxana, who didn't work and had entirely too much free time, looked at them like they had two heads. "Alright, fine. I guess you two are on the exact same wavelength. If you ever get married, you can just sit at home and work side by side. At least you won't fight about it. If one of you wanted to travel and the other wanted to work, it would be a disaster."
Winona flushed, embarrassed by the sudden leap to marriage. Stefan, however, seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood. A faint smile graced his lips.
