Killian thought it was a shame but didn't press the issue. After fondue, Winona said goodbye to her colleagues. Her car was in for service, so she had to hail a taxi.
As she stood by the road, she saw Yulen’s car. The passenger-side window rolled down, revealing Tallulah’s smiling face. “Winona, what a coincidence. We just had dinner with Mr. Harper. Do you want a ride back with us?” She knew Winona would refuse; the offer was purely a provocation.
“No, thanks. I’ll get a taxi,” Winona said flatly.
Yulen’s eyes swept over to her. “Get in,” he commanded in a tone that brooked no argument.
Winona was about to walk away when a text message lit up her phone. It was from her aunt, Helena: “Winona, if you have a moment, please bring Yulen over. Your grandmother visited your place yesterday. Your housekeeper, Cora, told her you haven’t been home lately. Grandma thinks you two are separated and has been refusing to eat since last night.”
Winona pressed her lips together and typed back a quick “Okay.”
A few days earlier, she had heard that Helena and Matteo had gotten back together, probably because of Nikita. Now, for Nikita’s health, she had to bring Yulen home. She just hoped he would be willing.
She opened the car door and slid into the back seat. Seeing her comply, Yulen’s expression softened. Tallulah, however, was clearly displeased. She had thought Winona was really leaving Yulen, but it seemed she couldn’t bear to give up her life of luxury after all.
As they passed a bakery, Tallulah said, “Yulen, I’m craving a cake from that shop.” Yulen pulled over. After Tallulah picked out her favorite cake, Yulen reminded her in a low voice, “Just a small piece. The doctor said you can’t have too much sugar.”
Tallulah stuck out her tongue playfully. “I know.” She glanced back at Winona. “Don’t you want any cake, Winona?”
As the scenery flew by, Winona finally spoke. “Yulen, I need to go to my aunt’s place. Can you drop me off? And… if you’re free tomorrow night, could you come see my grandmother?”
Seeing that she was inviting him to see Nikita, Yulen assumed she was using her grandmother as an excuse to reconcile. His doubts about where she had been staying also vanished. “Alright,” he said, his tone softening. “I’ll come with you tomorrow night.”
Sitting beside him, Tallulah’s eyes flashed with resentment before she quickly masked it. The car stopped at the entrance of the residential complex. Winona said her goodbyes and walked inside. Helena opened the door. “How’s Grandma?” Winona asked as she entered. “I came to see her.”
Helena sighed, gesturing toward the old woman’s room. “She’s so stubborn. She hasn’t come out all day. Refuses to eat.”
As Winona headed for her grandmother’s room, she heard Matteo’s voice from Greta's room, helping her with homework.
