Yulen was surprised to see her there. But then he figured she must have heard from Conrad or his assistant that he would be here and had followed him. This was typical of her, as far as he was concerned—after every fight, she would block him for a few days, then come back and apologize. He was used to her emotional swings and didn’t think much of it.
Unexpectedly, however, Winona walked right past him without a single glance. Frowning, Yulen stepped forward and grabbed her arm. “Winona, what is wrong with you? You were the one who wanted to come work at the company, but look at your attitude—skipping work, ignoring my messages, blocking me. If you don’t come back, I’ll give your director role to Tallulah.”
Winona finally looked at him. He must really be in love with Tallulah to give her such an important position. She let out a sarcastic laugh. “If you think Tallulah is a better fit, then by all means, let her have the job.” She pulled her arm free and turned to leave.
Yulen felt that something was seriously off. He remembered a time when he’d been unable to spend time with her for two or three months due to work, and she had complained. But somewhere along the line, the complaints had stopped. Now, she was so cold, as if she didn’t care about him at all.
Just then, Tallulah touched his arm. “Yulen, the lecture is about to start.” Yulen tore his gaze away from Winona, deciding to focus on the matter at hand.
When Winona returned from the restroom, the lecture had already begun. She slipped into a seat in the back row and listened quietly to Mr. Harper’s speech. After it ended, Jericho was swarmed by a crowd of university leaders and pharmaceutical executives, including Yulen and Tallulah. Winona didn’t approach, instead discussing lunch plans with Killian.
“Mr. Harper will probably be dining with the university officials,” Killian said. “We’ll grab something on our own. Winona, didn’t you say there’s a great fondue place nearby?”
Tallulah’s sense of accomplishment soared. She would prove to Yulen that she was superior to Winona, capable of not only giving him a child but also advancing his career.
While Jericho went to dinner with the university leaders, Winona and her lab colleagues headed to the fondue restaurant. During the meal, Killian said, “Mr. Harper is considering a partnership with Locke Group. I’ve heard their herbal medicine research is very strong, and I’m quite interested in their projects. Winona, would you want to join the collaborative team? If you do, we can sign up together.”
Wanting no further ties with Locke Group, Winona politely declined. “I’m not interested in their projects. I just want to focus on what I’m doing now.”
