"Mr. Scully," Stefan began, his voice dangerously smooth. "Don't you think you're overstepping on the PD-1 inhibitor project? We are investors. We don't possess the technical expertise to dictate lab assignments. Shouldn't internal personnel decisions be left to the scientists?"
Sylvan immediately understood. Stefan was calling to defend Winona.
So, she had already run crying to her billionaire boyfriend. What a manipulative woman.
"You're forgetting something, Stefan. I'm not entirely ignorant—I have an academic background in pharmacology. My professional assessment is that Giselle is far more capable of leading this team than Winona."
Stefan scoffed. "Are you absolutely certain personal bias didn't factor into that 'professional assessment'?"
Sylvan felt zero remorse. "Regardless, both Mrs. Mallory and I voted for Giselle. Even if you back Winona, you're outvoted."
"I hope you don't regret this."
"I won't," Sylvan fired back. "Giselle holds a Master's from a top-tier global university and has an impeccable resume. Winona is just an undergrad. If Jericho Harper wasn't holding her hand, she'd be nothing."
Stefan's eyes went glacial. "Your prejudice is blinding you. If you had bothered to actually read Winona's papers or her clinical strategy, you wouldn't be saying something so idiotic.
"But since you're so intent on forcing Giselle into the role, fine. But hear this: if Giselle fails to produce actionable results within three months, I will demand her removal. If you refuse, Goddard Group pulls all funding immediately."
Sylvan hesitated, but his pride won out. "Fine. I'm fully confident Giselle's talent will prove you wrong."
Stefan ended the call and stepped back into the living room.
Winona was sitting on the rug, tossing a toy for Biscuit. She noticed the dark cloud hanging over him. "Bad mood? Did whoever was on the phone upset you?"
Stefan nodded stiffly. "Yes."
Winona smiled, amused. "What did they do?"
Camille was the most vicious. She looked at Tallulah as if scraping her off the bottom of her shoe.
"I warned Yulen that the HSV-121 drug was a massive financial liability," Camille snapped. "I told him to run a full risk assessment. But no, you just had to manipulate him into pouring capital into it.
"I literally bought the perfect strategic roadmap from Winona, intending to have her lead the clinical trials. But you threw a tantrum, demanded the lead spot, and swore you could handle it. Well? Fix it! You're hiding in this house, letting my family's company burn to the ground. Have you no shame?"
Tallulah clutched her stomach, preparing to fake a dizzy spell, but Camille stepped forward, cutting off her escape route.
"Research always has risks!" Tallulah shot back defensively. "It's a highly complex drug. Setbacks are normal! I'm trying to find a solution. If you just give me time—"
"Give us a timeline, then!" Camille demanded. "When? Because every day production is stalled, Locke Group bleeds cash. My brother worked himself into a hospital bed because of you. You're a walking disaster! Marrying you was the worst mistake he ever made!"
Humiliated, Tallulah shoved her pregnant belly forward like a shield. "I am carrying the Locke family heir! I've done my part for this family! You're married—keep your nose out of our company's business. Yulen hasn't blamed me for a thing, so who the hell are you to scream at me?"
