Winona took a smooth step back, effortlessly dodging her hands.
"You're the one who installed the virtual machine software on my computer, aren't you, Eloise? You and Karina were in on this together."
Eloise's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly recovered her bravado. "I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about."
Winona let out a cold laugh. "I filed a police report last night and retained a lawyer. I am actively pressing charges against Karina for corporate espionage. If you think she's going to stick her neck out to protect you, you're incredibly naive. Apologize and hand in your resignation right now, and I'll consider our past working relationship enough to let you walk away with your dignity intact."
Eloise ground her teeth together.
If she apologized, she'd be confessing on the record. With corporate espionage on her resume, she would never work in pharmaceutical research again.
The surrounding colleagues, shocked by the revelation, immediately began whispering among themselves.
Killian, who had been briefed about the police report the night before, stepped forward. His voice was laced with disbelief. "Eloise, I can't believe you'd do something so vindictive that doesn't even benefit you. I am incredibly disappointed in you."
He knew Eloise harbored some professional jealousy toward Winona and occasionally gossiped, but he had always believed she was fundamentally a decent person and a dedicated researcher. He had assumed she would eventually earn a senior spot in the lab.
Instead, she had completely nuked her own career.
Eloise had always harbored a secret crush on Killian. Initially, she hadn't hated Winona that much. But having to listen to Killian constantly sing Winona's praises in front of the whole team had let resentment fester into outright hatred.
She didn't think she was any less talented than Winona. She firmly believed Winona only got ahead because she knew how to play office politics and suck up to management.
Hearing Killian say he was disappointed in her made her eyes well up with angry tears.
His respect for her intellect and iron-clad nerves skyrocketed. No wonder Mr. Harper had appointed her to lead the project. She truly was the most formidable person on their team.
After finalizing her paperwork, Eloise returned to pack her desk. Not a single coworker—not even the ones she used to take coffee breaks with—came over to comfort her or say goodbye.
The cold shoulder only fueled her self-righteous fury.
Before walking out the door, she loudly addressed the room, trying to stir up a panic. "Winona just wanted me gone, so she set me up! Just wait—she'll do the exact same thing to all of you eventually!"
The room remained dead silent. Everyone acted as if she were completely invisible.
Sure, some people in the lab admired Winona, and others were quietly envious of her. But with Mr. Harper hospitalized, Killian and Winona were jointly running the department. More importantly, Winona was at the helm of the lab's most critical, high-budget project.
