Stefan was playing bridge with a friend.
His bodyguard entered the room. "Ms. Jowett is safe, sir. Yulen took her to the Oak Hotel."
Stefan nodded and played a card.
His friend, Hayes Yarwood, asked curiously, "Which Ms. Jowett is that? Your new girl?"
Stefan shot him a cool glance but said nothing.
Seeing that the stoic man wouldn't talk, Hayes turned to the bodyguard. "Is this Ms. Jowett your boss's girlfriend?"
The bodyguard looked uncomfortable, unwilling to discuss his employer's private life.
As Hayes persisted, Stefan finally spoke. "A friend. She was kidnapped, so I had my people retrieve her."
"Then why didn't you go yourself?"
"It wasn't necessary," Stefan replied. He wouldn't have made it in time anyway, and his men were ruthlessly efficient.
Seeing that Stefan had only sent his men, Hayes assumed he wasn’t seriously interested in the woman. Otherwise, how could he remain so calm when a beautiful woman was in danger?
Still, he found Stefan remarkably dispassionate. In all these years, not a single woman had managed to capture his heart, not even a high-society beauty like Ophelia, who was both talented and gorgeous. He wondered who could possibly tame him.
After the game, Stefan was driven back to his villa. It was the anniversary of his younger brother's death, and his mood was grim, which was the only reason he had agreed to meet Hayes.
Suddenly, his phone vibrated. It was a text from Ophelia Powell.
"Why didn't Yulen come with you?" Nikita asked.
"He's busy with work," Winona said casually. "Grandma, you should go home and rest. Last night was just a false alarm, so don't dwell on it."
Helena saw through the facade but said nothing, merely giving Winona a worried look.
After dropping them off, Winona went to the supermarket for groceries and household supplies, then went home to get some work done. She had just arrived when she received a call from the police station. "Ms. Jowett, we've interrogated the suspect. He insists it was his own idea and that no one else was involved."
Winona's heart sank. She didn't believe for a second that Tallulah had nothing to do with it. What Tallulah had said on the phone last night proved she knew everything. But with the police saying this, there was nothing she could do but hang up.
She thought for a moment and called Yulen. The five hundred thousand was a loan from Stefan that she had to repay. Tallulah was responsible for this mess, and if Yulen was going to cover for her, he could be the one to cover the debt.
Yulen was surprised to receive her call. "Winona, what's up?"
