"You are nothing more than my biological father," Winona says, her voice like ice. "Do you think that mere biological link gives you the right to control my life, judge my family, and demand my obedience? Do you really think so? I'm a grown woman, not a child. Your actions only make me despise you. I want you to leave right now!"
Sylvan's blood boils, but her words ruthlessly choke off the lecture forming in his throat.
Ezra and Waldo step forward and promptly escort him out.
Once they are gone, Winona turns to Helena, her expression softening. "Are you alright, Helena?"
"I'm fine," Helena replies. "But that Sylvan Scully... you were right. He's a real piece of work."
That night, Sylvan can't help but call Wynne to complain about Winona's attitude.
"I'm her father. I'm doing everything for her, but she doesn't appreciate any of it."
Wynne's voice is frigid. "You constantly criticize her. But to me, Winona is kind, brilliant, and absolutely perfect.
She grew up this well because she received guidance and love from the family that raised her. Yes, they weren't rich, but they never mistreated her. They put her through college and gave everything they had to buy her a place in Riverton. You couldn't even manage half of what they did, Sylvan."
"I can give her so much more!" Sylvan argues, offended. "Are you saying I'm worse than them?"
Wynne sneers. "If they had ten dollars, they'd give her nine, and they would never ask for anything in return. If you had ten dollars, you'd give her nine, but you'd demand a massive emotional return on your investment. That is the difference between you and them."
Sylvan fumes.
He feels Wynne doesn't understand him at all.
