Winona's voice was pure ice. "Am I the cruel one, or is your family? Have you miraculously forgotten everything you all did to me? I was pregnant with Yulen's child once, and he killed that baby with his own hands. I still remember the agonizing pain of feeling my child leave my body. And you, Camille—you actually expected me to forget all that trauma, play nice, and make money with you? Did you really think that was possible?"
Camille was stunned into silence. "You... you were pregnant? No, that's impossible. If that were true, why didn't you say anything back then?"
Winona let out a dark, mocking laugh. "He brought Tallulah right into our home and paraded her around. If I had spoken up, what would that make my child? I absolutely refused to let my baby be born into that toxic mess as some sidelined afterthought. I planned to leave and raise the baby completely on my own, but Yulen didn't even give me the chance to do that. So tell me, Camille—if you were in my shoes, could you easily let off the people who murdered your child?"
Camille was a mother herself; she could certainly empathize with the visceral horror Winona was describing.
But the perpetrator was her own brother, and blood ties made it impossible for her to side with Winona.
Her voice grew tight and strained. "Winona, that was a long time ago. Besides, you have Stefan now. You're going to have a beautiful, brilliant future. Can't you just let Yulen and our family go?"
"Sorry. I'm not that generous."
Winona ended the call.
Lexie, the housekeeper, brought over a small plate of freshly sliced kiwis. "Here, Winona. Have some fruit."
She looked at Winona's growing bump with a warm, affectionate smile.
She had noticed Winona filling out nicely over the past few months and was absolutely thrilled when she learned it was because of the baby.
It was perfectly healthy for an expectant mother to put on a little weight—it meant the baby was getting exactly what it needed.
Winona thanked her and, after finishing the fruit, decided to get up and stretch her legs.
Just then, Stefan walked through the door.
Winona caught a faint whiff of alcohol. "Did you have a business dinner tonight? You actually drank?"
He rarely drank at networking events unless it was absolutely necessary.
