Yulen swallowed hard, fighting the bile rising in his throat. Every passing second with this woman felt like pure torture. The thought of marrying her, kissing her, touching her—it made his skin crawl.

And yet, looking across the restaurant to where Winona and Stefan were sitting together, a wave of indescribable humiliation washed over him.

He hadn't wanted Winona to see him like this. He didn't want her to see him with Mamie Tatum.

It felt as though the proud, untouchable man he used to be had been shattered in an instant.

He realized that even though Winona had destroyed his career and his reputation, he didn't hate her. Her actions had to have been born out of a twisted, desperate kind of love. It meant that, at one point, what they had was real.

But he couldn't stand the thought of her seeing him so pathetic. He didn't want her pity.

Instead, Winona simply offered him a brief, weightless glance before turning back to her meal as if he were entirely inconsequential.

That sheer indifference cut deeper than any insult.

Mamie stared at Yulen's stony silence and let out a mocking laugh. "What, giving me the silent treatment? Let me guess, you think I'm not as pretty as she is?"

Yulen's throat felt dry as bone. He couldn't force a single word out.

He gripped the handles of Mamie's wheelchair and pushed her forward.

She wouldn't let it go, her voice needling into his brain. "Still hung up on her? Look at her, she's practically having another man's kid! Yulen, as long as you treat me right, I can give you everything."

The nagging grated on his last nerve. Her promises meant absolutely nothing to him.

If it weren't for the fact that she could hand him the resources to rebuild his empire, he wouldn't have spent another second in her presence.

Winona and Stefan finished their dinner and stepped out of the restaurant.

To them, the bizarre encounter with Yulen and Mamie was nothing more than a minor blip in their evening.

Heading back toward their neighborhood, Stefan stopped at a local pet store near the gates to pick up some new toys for their pets.
