Margaret offered her son a sickeningly sweet smile. "Stefan, you must be exhausted juggling work and the hospital. I brought Liana along to help look after your grandmother. If you need anything, she's here for you."
Liana cast him a shy, doe-eyed glance.
"No, thank you," Stefan replied, his tone glacial. "The Goddard family matters don't require an outsider's help."
Liana's face flushed with embarrassment.
She knew he was ruthless, but she hadn't expected him to strip her of her dignity so thoroughly.
Margaret took a deep breath, fighting the urge to scream at her son. She opted for a long-suffering tone instead. "You're always singing Winona's praises, putting her on a pedestal. But your grandmother is gravely ill, and where is she? If she really loved you, wouldn't she be here?"
"Caring for Violet is my responsibility, not Winona's," Stefan fired back coldly. "I'm not going to outsource my duties to my wife. And frankly, mother, you only drop by for half an hour a day. Has Gabriel ever demanded that you stay by grandmother's side around the clock?"
Margaret choked on her words.
Stefan wasn't like Gabriel Goddard.
Gabriel had been complaining lately that she wasn't doing enough at the hospital.
But why should she?
Violet had never been particularly warm to her.
Plus, there were three daughters-in-law in the family—why was the burden entirely on her? It should be split evenly to be fair.
Unable to win the argument, Margaret turned on her heel and stormed off, dragging Liana with her.

Another month slipped by.
Violet's condition slowly improved, but she wasn't cleared to leave the hospital.
