Helena was finally at ease.
During dinner, Winona carefully brought up the relocation to her grandmother.
Nikita agreed without missing a beat. "Go. Go be with Stefan. Don't waste a second worrying about me. We have a live-in caretaker now, and I'm perfectly fine. The only thing that matters is keeping your family together."
She then fixed a stern gaze on Stefan. "The Capital is a new world for her. Are you going to have her back?"
Stefan promised without hesitation. "Always. Winona is uprooting her life for me. Whatever she wants to pursue, I will move mountains to support her."
Satisfied, Nikita nodded.
After the meal, Nikita pulled Winona aside into her bedroom.
She handed her an old bank book. Winona stared at it, bewildered.
"Your grandfather left this for my retirement," Nikita whispered. "There's twenty thousand dollars in here. He told me never to touch it, just in case my children couldn't take care of me. But I have Helena, and I'm well taken care of. I want you to have this. Keep it for a rainy day."
She had held onto this money for years, never even considering touching it when she was critically ill.
Winona's eyes welled with tears. "Grandma, I make a great living now. Keep this for yourself."
No matter how many times Winona showed her the zeros on her paycheck, Nikita always worried it wasn't enough.
"You have a child now. Kids are expensive," Nikita insisted. "You're moving to a big city, and what if finding a good job takes time? What if you run into trouble and need cash?"
In Nikita's eyes, Winona was still that little girl who needed protecting.
She loved Helena deeply, but her heart always ached a little more for Winona.
Helena had grown up with two loving parents. Winona had been robbed of hers, leaving her childhood fractured.
