Stefan was busy reading a bedtime story to Audrey. "If I have to solve all of his problems," he replied without looking up, "I might as well take the GM job at Cirrus myself. There's no point in him being there."
Winona understood instantly. Gabriel had hit a wall and was running to his son for the answers. A wave of sympathy washed over her. Both of his parents constantly dragged him down, yet simultaneously tried to control him. It had to be exhausting.
The following evening, Gabriel showed up at their house. Stefan hadn't returned yet; he was visiting Violet. Winona remembered how Gabriel had struck Stefan in the past, and she harbored a quiet resentment toward him. Stefan carried the entire weight of the Goddard family on his shoulders. Even if Gabriel wasn't proud of him, being so harsh was infuriating.
Gabriel noticed that his future daughter-in-law wasn't showing him the deference he felt he deserved. He had been sitting there for ages, and she hadn't offered him coffee or brought his granddaughter out to greet him. She lacked basic manners. However, he maintained his dignified silence, refusing to scold her. Disciplining the daughter-in-law was a mother-in-law's job. As the patriarch, he needed to remain steady and not lower himself to bicker over trivial household matters.
Winona was genuinely busy. She went into the study to finish some work. When she finally felt hungry, she asked the nanny to make a simple bowl of pasta. Seeing her eating, Audrey toddled over, eyes wide with curiosity. Winona had the nanny scoop a small portion into a bowl and set Audrey up in her high chair to eat.
Gabriel still hadn't had dinner. Seeing Winona eat without even offering him a plate felt like a direct challenge to his authority. He made a mental note to have Stefan put her in her place later.
Just as they finished eating, Stefan walked through the door. Acting as if Gabriel was completely invisible, he walked straight past the living room and into the dining area. He handed two boxes of pumpkin pastries to the nanny to put in the fridge, making sure to remind Winona, "You have an early start tomorrow. Grab these on your way out for breakfast. Don't forget."
Winona smiled. "Got it."
Spotting the boxes, Audrey grabbed Stefan's pant leg. "Daddy, Audrey wants some too!"
